Are any of you administering Exchange 2010 and had memory issues? Seems that store.exe goes off and grabs whatever memory it can. I'd be interested to know what solution (if any) you applied that actually worked. George.

I have to say that I was hugely relieved not to have had a cup of anything hot in my hand when I read your reply, Andrew. Seems that Microsoft and HP/Compaq have their own definition of the word "normal"!! Thanks to a major nasty, we replaced our aging Server and Exchange 2003 over the New Year holiday. Installing SBS 2010 appeared to make sense, until we discovered that the supplied 4 Gb was insufficient. So this was doubled. All appeared OK, but slow, so we doubled it to the HP's max of 16Gb. (Bear in mind that's also double Microsoft SBS own memory advice!) But the detailed daily SBS reports started to show problems, and cutting a long story short, it was tracked down to lack of resources. Store.exe was taking up half of the available RAM. Seems we're far from the only ones suffering that problem - it's quite a "normal" problem. We're far from out of the woods yet, but I'm letting the Microsoft Partner network's people sort the rest out. I've shelled out enough so far for this box of [expletive deleted]. What, exactly, is wrong with Exchange using as much available RAM as possible? What else did you plan to do with the RAM? This is normal, expected behavior. Exchange 2003 was the last version of Exchange to use no more than 4GB of RAM. What do you mean by "memory issues? Was Exchange not performing well? I administer about 90 physical/virtual servers for a small government agency; wit the exception of domain controllers and print servers, the majority of our systems have over 4GB of RAM--there are plenty with 16GB, a few with 24-32GB, and our SAS server is allocated 64GB. Hi Matt, When usage of memory, basically standing still, reaches between 80 and 90%, performance goes down the toilet. Even Microsoft were alarmed at that, but have yet to come back with an analysis of the reports they requested. It's a tiny system, with only 3 users/mailboxes and less than 7 workstations at any given time of which onl;y the three of us would be using. I'm clearly not alone here. I've fairly extensively research the problem, and many users with SBS 2011 are frequently re-starting their servers, some even on a daily basis to keep store.exe at a reasonable level. I've now limited mine to 4GB, so we'll see over a few days what happens. SBS may well be the last offering in this range, but it is crammed full of issues. Some of the most irritating are those which appear regularly in the Event logs as warnings, but after you spend an age researching, they tell you the error is benign and can be ignored. Grrrrr! Hi, Curtailing the resources available to Exchange is seriously not the way to go imho, you will reduce the performance of the Exchange system by doing this as the system is unable to cache the database efficiently. I have had an SBS2011 system here for some time, and I never got those types of issues. Are you running anything else on the box other than the SBS stuff, what is the specs of the box, how are the disks laid out etc? I would definitely look at disk configuration, other services/applications running on the system, etc. Andrew is correct; limiting Exchange to 4GB is not going to work out well. On 4/28/2013 5:40 PM, Andrew Hodgson wrote:

Hi, Again, that is expected behaviour, the system will cache as much as the mailstore into RAM as possible, 4GB of RAM is not even scratching the surface for SBS 2011, 16GB will be fine, and as you say, you have around 8GB of used memory which is improving the performance of the Exchange box.
