Win 2k3 64 and screen readers
Hi all, I have inherited the responsibility of managing a Dell PE 2900 with Win 2k3. Since it has 8 gigs of memory I assume it is the 64 bit version of Win 2k3. Does anyone know what screen reader(s) I can get to work on it. Can the 64 bit version of JFW work in this scenario? Also on a related note if I have the service tag from the server is there anywhere on the Dell site where I can punch it in and find out just what equipment it was built with? Thanks Frank
Hi, not sure on the screen reader bit I have only run JFW64 under Vista. On the Dell part, you can browse to http://www.dell.com click on support and enter the service tag in the service tag field on the support site. One of the options is to display the system configuration. The other nice thing is you know all the drivers are matched. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Frank Ventura" <Frank.Ventura@littlebreezes.com> To: "Blind sysadmins list" <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Sent: Friday, September 25, 2009 5:36 PM Subject: [Blind-sysadmins] Win 2k3 64 and screen readers Hi all, I have inherited the responsibility of managing a Dell PE 2900 with Win 2k3. Hi Frank: I don't know about JAWS, but Window-Eyes will absolutely not work. You'll need Vista or later because they only have a 64-bit mirror driver. Do you know what the server does, what software's installed on it, etc.? If the server is running Windows 2003 Enterprise or Datacenter, then even the 32-bit version will work with the 8GB of memory, I'm not entirely sure how or why that's possible, but I think the 32-bit version of Enterprise supports up to 12GB, and Datacenter supports up to 64GB. I'd need to do some research to find the exact numbers though. I know a lot of people stuck to the 32-bit version of 2003 due to compatability purposes, a lot of non Microsoft apps just didn't like 64-bit Windows back in the days of 2003. Hi, No screen reader will work with Win2k3 X64. As others have said it may be a 32-bit version, but you need to check. If you can browse to the c$ share of the server, you can find out whether it is 32 or 64-bit by looking at the Program files folder - if 64-bit it will have two folders. Go to the Dell site and enter in the service tag, you can find out the original equipment shipped with the server. You can also download the two Dell startup disks - namely the Dell Server Build and Update utility and the Dell Server Updates utility. These are large downloads, but are worth it - the later one will upgrade firmware etc, and the first will allow you to do installs with all the correct drivers and certifications etc. If I were you and had access to the licenses I would upgrade that to 2008 server (or 2008 server R2) 64-bit edition. Thanks. Andrew. -----Original Message----- From: blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of Frank Ventura Sent: 26 September 2009 01:37 To: Blind sysadmins list Subject: [Blind-sysadmins] Win 2k3 64 and screen readers Hi all, I have inherited the responsibility of managing a Dell PE 2900 with Win 2k3. If you can upgrade, I would recommend 2008R2 for the following reason. This is Window-Eyes centric because that's what I use, but my understanding is this is a Microsoft limitation. There is a bug in Vista and 2008 X64 preventing RDP sessions from working properly when a mirror driver is installed. In otherwords, remote access to those types of machines does not work with a screen reader. I have no idea what Microsoft's plans are to get this bug addressed.
