comment on CPU/mobo/memeory selections
Please (seriously, please!) comment on these selections for a new build. I have to order by Dec 31. I picked the most popular I3 processor on newegg. Then I picked the cheapest Asus mobo with 4x memory slots (in case I ever want to go up to 16Gb). Then I picked the cheapest 2x4Gb 1600 memory. But I'm a bit iffy on how to know if all these parts are compatible. The reservations I have is with the I3 dual core processor. I think an I5 quad core would be less frustrating down the road, especially if you are using text to speech software. Then again the slower RAM will prevent your system from behaving too peppy. I don't think I saw a hard drive. Before you spend the money source a system that is an I5 with 8 GB of RAM and a 1 terabyte hard drive. You might be surprised how close the cost will be. Vic

According to the specs on the mobo, if I buy RAM faster than 1600, I'd have to overclock my CPU. The newegg page says, "Memory StandardDDR3 2200(O.C.)/2133(O.C.)/2000(O.C.)/1866(O.C.)/1600/1333/1066." So that would mean that fastest RAM you can use without overclocking is 1600, right? I already have a 1Tb hard drive. -----Original Message----- From: Blind-sysadmins [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of vic.pereira@ssc-spc.gc.ca Sent: Wednesday, December 05, 2012 2:57 PM To: blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] comment on CPU/mobo/memeory selections The reservations I have is with the I3 dual core processor. Without over clocking your CPU yes. And the last bottle neck would be your hard drive. Chances are it is a SATA drive therefore should be pretty good without worrying about getting into the more expensive solid state drives with less capacity. -----Original Message----- From: Blind-sysadmins [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of John G. Definitely agree here, if you're only running an I3 disk access shouldn't be a big deal. SSD would be faster but you won't take full advantage of it like you would with a more peppy CPU. 3 On Dec 5, 2012, at 4:45 PM, <vic.pereira@ssc-spc.gc.ca> wrote:

Hi, Is the $200 for an ivybridge I5 or Sandybridge like the I3 you chose is? Going for the I5 would seem a no brainer to me if you're going to be doing virtualization; I have a mobile I3 that's a couple of generations old in my laptop and 7 host with a 7 guest is doable, but it's not the most enjoyable thing in the world so I'm waiting for a good deal on a i5 on eBay then I'll upgrade. Perhaps see if you can find a cheap SATA III 60GB SSD to use as a boot drive? Do you know the RPM of that 1TB? Cheers, Ben. On 12/5/12, John G. Heim <jheim@math.wisc.edu> wrote:

Well, I'll probably go with the I5 after all. It's a shame though because I specked out aan I5 build about a month ago and happened to find the CPU and mobo both on sale for $50 off. But I asked about it on another list and they said I was throwing money away on a system way more powerful than what I need. I am replacing a system I'd build myself with an AMD quad-core Phenom 2 processor and 8Gb of ram. I gave that machine away but not because I was unhappy with it. Windows7 ran very nicely in a vm with a single core and 4 Gb of ram. I bumped the vm up to two cores at one point but it didn't seem to make a huge amount of difference. I was happy with the speedbut I just had 4 cores so I figured I might as well use them. I really think that with Windows, the thing is the ram, not the number of cores. That's why I figured an I3 would probably be fine. A dual-core I3 gives you about the same speed as a quad-core Phenom 2. I do HPC for the Math Department at the University of Wisconsin and I'm about as sure of that as I can be. That's about the only thing I am sure of. But since I can afford the I5, I might as well go that way. No sense in taking chances. I might as well get 16Gb of ram as well. I wonder if newegg targets its sales to what they see you browsing on their web site. I just got an ad cor a sale on 8Gb ram. -----Original Message----- From: Blind-sysadmins [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of Ben Mustill-Rose Sent: Wednesday, December 05, 2012 5:19 PM To: Blind sysadmins list Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] comment on CPU/mobo/memeory selections Hi, Is the $200 for an ivybridge I5 or Sandybridge like the I3 you chose is? Scott,
What is your opinion on the I3 vs I5 thing? I intend to run linux with Win7 in a virtual machine. Can I just swap out the I3 for an I5?

+1, looks ok for a lower end machine. Everything should work together.
THanks Scott

Please (seriously, please!) comment on these selections for a new build. I have to order by Dec 31. I picked the most popular I3 processor on newegg. Then I picked the cheapest Asus mobo with 4x memory slots (in case I ever want to go up to 16Gb). Then I picked the cheapest 2x4Gb 1600 memory. But I'm a bit iffy on how to know if all these parts are compatible.

Well, the I3 is only $120. An I5 is approximately $200. -----Original Message----- From: Blind-sysadmins [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of Ben Mustill-Rose Sent: Wednesday, December 05, 2012 2:45 PM To: Blind sysadmins list Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] comment on CPU/mobo/memeory selections Hi, Looks good to me; everything should be ok so long as your happy with an i3. I can't remember the initial thread. If you will be running LINUX then everything should be OK. Windows 7 there may be some lag. The good news is I understand Windows 8 to be more peppy so far than 7. But we will see what happens after the first service pack.
