Maybe the drivers for your particular sound card are not on the install image. Try with USB headphones. KNFBReader does pretty well reading Windows installation screens. Over the weekend I found out about a free app from Microsoft, called Seeing AI, that I've been told is just as good or better. I haven't tried Seeing AI yet but I have installed Win 10 entirely by reading the screens with KNFBReader. Does your computer's onboard audio interface work without a third-party driver? Or is it even enabled in the BIOS or UEFI? I Had this problem once. It took a little doing, but I got an inexpensive USB audio interface, connected it, and Narrator ran immediately without any drivers. Seeing AI and the KNFB reader leave a lot to be desired in terms of OCR, not to mention the fact that neither of them can tell you where your cursor is, what's been selected, etc. Narrator surely can. Don't ya just hate when silly stuff like that happens? I Had a USB cable that was about a sixteenth of an inch from being fully pushed home into its socket, but that was enough to make it stop working, and to make me think a very expensive device had broken!
