Hi All
I have a network with gigabit equipment and cabling installed across the entire infrastructure and I am using 2 win 10 pro Dell laptops to transfer files from 1 PC to the other. These laptops both have gigabit NICs installed and are wired into the network. The thing is, I am only getting about 10 to 15 mbps transfer speeds. My first question is can anyone figure out why or is there something silly I have missed? Secondly, is there any accessible tools I could use to run tests to try and identify the limiting factors that might be causing this problem? If any further info is needed that might help I would be happy to give it. Thanks for any help Luke

Hi, I would make sure that the NIC's are in full duplex. What kind of networking equipment are you using? Also, what is the HD specs? SSD or SATA? Hi Try connecting the laptops to each other directly - that way you can rule out all the other equipment. If that fails I'd try transfering the same files over FTP / SCP to see if that makes a difference assuming you're currently using SMB. Also, probably a silly question but are you sure the router is gigabit - most consumer grade / ISP provided routers aren't? Cheers, Ben. Secondly, is there any accessible tools I could use to run tests to try and identify the limiting factors that might be causing this problem? If any further info is needed that might help I would be happy to give it. Thanks for any help Luke

Hi Ben I had the same thought about the router and throughout these past couple of days have triple checked my equipment and it is all gigabit :) FTP gives me similar speeds, average is about 5 MB faster so I’m getting about 20 MB. I never thought connecting the two together would actually work? What will be created when I do that then? And which, if any, of the two devices will initiate things? Thanks for all help guys Luke

Hi
Try connecting the laptops to each other directly - that way you can rule out all the other equipment. If that fails I'd try transfering the same files over FTP / SCP to see if that makes a difference assuming you're currently using SMB. Also, probably a silly question but are you sure the router is gigabit - most consumer grade / ISP provided routers aren't?
Cheers, Ben.

Hi All
I have a network with gigabit equipment and cabling installed across the entire infrastructure and I am using 2 win 10 pro Dell laptops to transfer files from 1 PC to the other.

Hi When I've done this in the past I've just set one of the machines up as a DHCP server then everything pretty much just works as you'd expect it to. Windows actually includes a DHCP server (of sorts) as part of internet connection sharing but when I've wanted more control I've used TFTPD32 which is what I'd suggest you use, but it's been a couple of years so I can't speak to the accessibility of the latest versions. Another silly question but are you sure that both machines are using Ethernet and not WiFi? Your numbers are strange - a bit too high for 100Mbps Ethernet but way too low for Gigabit. To be honest they're slow for WiFi as well, but depending on your environment not completely unrealistic. On 2/18/18, Luke Scholey <l.scholey.lists@lukescholey.co.uk> wrote:

When I've done this in the past I've just set one of the machines up as a DHCP server then everything pretty much just works as you'd expect it to.

Hi, Assuming 100Mbps - E.G. 100 Megabits you can in theory expect a speed of 100/8 - E.G. 12.5MBps (12.5 megabytes a second). In practice it will be slower than that due to software overheads. Assuming 1 Gbps - E.G. 1 gigabit a second you can expect speeds of 1000/8 - E.G. 125MBps (125 megabytes per second). Note that in this scenario in addition to software overheads the speed of the device you're transfering from may also come into play. I don't know what is causing your slowdowns but if I were in your situation I'd try to apply basic troubleshooting principals: remove as many variables from the situation as possible then build your way back up. In your situation this would probably mean a direct connection then assuming that worked add the router into the equation and go from there. Do the machines have any anti virus products running that might be scanning encoming / outgoing traffic? One slightly over the top test might be to boot into Ubuntu or similar on both machines and copy a test file. Obviously there are quite a few variables at play there, but if you get sensible speeds you'll be able to rule out the hardware. Cheers, Ben. Hi Ben I’ll give that program a try - thanks. They are definitely not using WiFi :) I turned it off before testing. What makes you say my speeds seem to high for 100 mbps? Wouldn’t you say they are very slow for both 100 and gigabit? Thanks Luke

Hi
When I've done this in the past I've just set one of the machines up as a DHCP server then everything pretty much just works as you'd expect it to.

I had a case with bad RJ 45 mail connector that would slow down internet speed from 100 mbps to about 8-10. I spent so much time troubleshooting with application layer, network layer, security services, VPN checks, VLAN checking and it turned out I needed to start with physical layer. Once bad connector got fixed, everything went back to normal speeds. As Ben already mentioned, start from basics and move up that OSI model. I would also check on the NIC drivers or any additional configuration applications maybe something is not playing nice with Win 10. -----Original Message----- From: Blind-sysadmins [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of Luke Scholey Sent: Sunday, February 18, 2018 4:08 PM To: Blind sysadmins list <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] LAN Speeds Hi Ben I’ll give that program a try - thanks.

I never thought connecting the two together would actually work? What will be created when I do that then? And which, if any, of the two devices will initiate things? Thanks for all help guys Luke

With gigabit, you get the auto-MDIX standard which means that you do not need to worry about crossover cables any more. Secondarily, unless you are using fiber interface cards, gigabit ethernet will auto-negotiate the best speed/duplex settings.

If you are connecting the laptops directly by RJ45 cable, I presume it need to be a crossover cable?

Hi Ben I had the same thought about the router and throughout these past couple of days have triple checked my equipment and it is all gigabit :) FTP gives me similar speeds, average is about 5 MB faster so I’m getting about 20 MB. I never thought connecting the two together would actually work? What will be created when I do that then? And which, if any, of the two devices will initiate things? Thanks for all help guys Luke
