Hello, Does anyone have a procedure to remove avast5 from a machine? Add/remove programs won't do it due to the fact that the program has a self protection module. Thanks. Dave
Surprise, surprise! Avast themselves have a utility - see: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility George. -----Original Message----- From: blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of David Mehler Sent: 26 December 2010 15:20 To: blind-sysadmins Subject: [Blind-sysadmins] removing avast5? Hello, Thanks. That information is more current than the postings I had read, which indicated it couldn't be uninstalled with it's self protection module running. Ok, another problem, if I load windows in safe mode then run the utility to do the work, I don't have sound and/or speech. I've got a pen drive with NVDA on it or the machines in question do have jfw on them, either would work if I could get sound. Does anyone know if it's possible to get sound in safe mode then speech, then to run the uninstall, here's the big one all without sighted assistance? I liked avast4, I do not like avast5. Thanks. Dave. On 12/26/10, George Bell <george@techno-vision.co.uk> wrote:

Dave, u don't tell us what your OS is. W/vista/7, my understanding is that sound is available in safe mode, but not in xp. U can disable avast's shields thru the system tray. On 12/26/10, David Mehler <dave.mehler@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi, Sorry, the OS on all of the machines with avast on it is xp. I've atempted to disable avast's shields via the system tray, the checkboxes uncheck I apply the changes then go back in to the UI, and they're back checked again and a nonsafe mode removal fails. Thanks. Dave On 12/26/10, Jackie McBride <abletec@gmail.com> wrote:

David, here's wussup. Activate the menu from the system tray. Then, you'll need to route jaws to pc & use down arrow to go down to the 'disable shields permanently'. Left click that, & it'll ask u for a password. Enter it & press enter. On 12/26/10, David Mehler <dave.mehler@gmail.com> wrote:

I was under the impression that the thing that needs to be disabled for this to work is in settings > troubleshooting and not in the pop menue that you can find via the system tray. At any rate, I would also be interested in knowing the answer to this. I tried running the removal tool and pointing it to a drive that I slaved which had avast installed on it, but it didn't completely remove it since the issues that I was having before I removed it were all still there. Hi, I've not been able to find the disable all shields permanently item. Are there other ways of removing this program? Thanks. Dave On 12/26/10, Ben Mustill-Rose <bmustillrose@gmail.com> wrote:
