portable antimalware products
Hello, I need recommendations for portable apps, apps that run from thumb drives, for antimalware work. I've got a Win7 Home Premium 64 bit box that I'm probably going to be paying a visit to either tomorrow or next weekend that has got something on it that I'm not sure what. I've heard various things it started out as a worm, then a virus called win32.blaster, then a rootkit/backdoor, bottomline I'm getting just guesswork from it's owner until I see it, I'm also concerned about two toolbars delio toolbar and something called vtoolbar updater 10.2 which added in a services entry, anyone know of either of these? I don't trust any AV running on the box, particularly Norton 360, and I don't think that's all there is. Does anyone utilize any good general rootkit/worm/Antivirus that goes from a thumb drive? I'm going to be running this from a drive using NVDA also on the same drive. Thanks. Dave.
Unless you have a way of write-protecting the thumb drive then portable aps won't help. As soon as you plug the thumb drive it'll likely get infected and take the fun home with you. Cleaning on something like grml is tricky as the virus definitions are out of date. Probably your best bet is to apply the registry hacks to get safe mode speech and boot into safe mode and scan from there. Curious how others deal with this... I usually pull the drive from the box, plug it into a Sata/IDE doc and scan it there. Regards, Kerry. On 8/04/2012 8:13 AM, David Mehler wrote:

Dear sir, I Am recommending You to download Clamwin portable. You can get it from The following link. http://freefr.dl.sourceforge.net/project/portableapps/ClamWin%20Portable/Add... Run The download .exe installer and install The product to The empty folder. Run The clamwinportable.exe and confirm, that You want to download The virus definition database. After virus definition database will be downloaded, exit Clamvin portable. Burn The whole folder structure including The sub folders to The CD-R media and take this media with You. varning. Clamwin portable is not so good like Microsoft security essentials. You can only scan or remove The files when virus will be found. Clamwin will clean and analyse The computers memory for malvare processes. The best solution for You and others administrators, who are visually impaired will be Windows8, when Windows to Go will be released, You will be able to take Windows8 installation with You on USB flash disk and You will be able to use Microsoft security essentials to clean viruses from The host computer. Triing to use antivirus from infected system can have The potential in various system instability issues. The realistic solution for You is to use some Windows PE live project to create The live USB or live CD. I have tried to install WIndows8 to USB external harddrive to make my virus cleaner tool on external USB harddisk, unfortunately, installer stopped to work after booting. Take in mind, that when You will use some live project, The virtual memory will not be available and that virus cleaning will take longer time than running it from normal Windows operating system. It is sad, but i do not know about Clamwin portable variant for Linux. So try to run Clamwin portable from The infected system and try to test this tool, what it will do with The system. Please let us know about The results of using clamwin portable with applied virus database update. When Clamwin will find The virus, it will let You know. If You will want to remove it, You will have to use options menu to specifi, that You want to remove The viruses.
This is excellent info thanks. Will also try this. Regards, kerry. On 8/04/2012 8:55 PM, Mgr. Janusz Chmiel wrote:

Happy Easter/Passover, all, for those who celebrate such. This is a complex subject, & very much depends on what's going on w/the machine. Clearly, booting the box to linux, updating virus definitions, & scanning is an excellent way to go, as rootkits that may be active when the OS is booted are obviously not in this particular scenario. It also allows for disinfection in a sterile field, as it were, to take an analogy from medicine. Many Linux-based antimalware solutions don't always clean up the registry, which can be a problem if malware entries are running there, as when they're cleaned, that can create errors that keep the computer from booting. Most flash cards can in fact be write protected, so in that particular case, portable apps can be helpful. 1 that has recently come to my attention, & that I'm liking *a lot*, is Ultra Virus Killer, freely available as both a portable & installer, at: www.carifred.com/uvk/ This program combines a lot of cuntionality to emulate apps such as Process Explorer, DDS, & others. It is run w/Windows booted, however, which, again, can allow some rootkits/bootkits to remain undetected. Hello Jackie, Thanks much for telling us about the UVK. Much appreciated. for portable anti-virus programs with in my so-called ultimate technicians toolkit, I use the following: antiviral toolkit ClamWin Casir. EScan I know the various antivirus manufacturers out there make linux versions of their antivirus programs available, but they don't include any screenreader or let-alone support for sound. If the linux guru's on this list can remaster their disks to include support for sound as well as screenreading it would be great. Dear sir, I Am recommending You to download The Microsoft Safety Scanner This excellent antivirus tool from Microsoft is containing The same amount of virus signatures like Microsoft security essentials. This tool is designed to run portably from PE environment and is not in conflict with other antivirus or antimalvaree tools. This program will work only 10 days, after 10 days till download date, You will have to download it again free of charge. It is protection mechanishm of Microsoft to allow users to use antivirus tool with latest virus databases. The advantage of this tool is, that it is 100 percently MSAA compatible, it is TAB and arrow keys based GUI, and program Ultra Virus Killer is not goodly accessible. Yes, NVDA can access ALL GUI elements by using The object navigation commands and if user will use those commands in The combination with INSERT+divide and numeric / It is possible to access all parts of it's GUI. But my opinion is, that Microsoft based tool will contain more virus signatures and GUI is fully accessible with screen readers without no need to use object navigation commands. But Yours tool can be also ammazing. The 32 bit variant of this excellent Microsoft antivirus tool can be downloaded from here. http://definitionupdates.microsoft.com/download/definitionupdates/safetyscan...
Hi Janus, Thanks much for the safety scanner as well. Yep, I have used win7pe as well as LiveXP before. But I wonder if removing the viruses from infected pc's is much more effective using linux based antivirus programs? My reason for wondering is this, many of the antivirus programs make their programs for windows but, come time for removal, they resort to using their program based on a linux live environment rather than microsoft's windows PE? On this list, people have talked about remastering distro's to include programs etc, I wonder if the same can be done for those already made antivirus live disks as well. Also, do you think its worth it to use these win7PE and LiveXP when windows 8 will come out? I find whilst using these PE's that one can do things that would normally not have been done in windows itself, but too many dependancies are missing for programs that would be great to use in removing of unwanted things. regards, ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mgr. Dear sir, I AM confirming, that Microsoft Safety Scanner is fully compatible with The windows PE environment. I have tested it with Windows PE based on Windows7, i will try it with PE environment version 1.0 based on Windows XP SP3 Professional edition. The Microsoft Safety Scanner is having excellent GUI adapted for The need of visually impaired users. The necessary information displaied during virus scanning are created by using Static object class name. NVDA is able to even automatically detect The object change on The focus, so You can even hear how many files have been scanned, how many files are infected. While running from live PE, when specifi The quick scan, product will scan The virtual RAM drives with Windows operating files awailable on those RAM drives when running live PE. When specifiing The full scan, program will scan all RAM drives and will continue to scan all system NTFS partitions awailable and all other system partitions. You can specifi The custom and last option is enabling You to specifi The folder. But for security reasons, antivirus will scan whole virtual RAM drives with executable files and will continue with The folder, which You have specified. Very important varning for all users, who would want to try this excellent antivirus, antispyware and anti removal tool. This program like all other antivirus program is allocating many MB of RAM while performing The system scan. So be careful and when using with 512 MB of RAM or less, You can get some memory managment based error messages of Windows core, which will protect You from severe system instability. I will let You know, if this Antivirus will be able to cooperate with older Windows PE version. Using XP PE is allocating much less RAM. You can also determine, how much RAM will be allocated when running Windows7 based PE project by tune whole project, but i will write another article about customizing some projects. In general, i Am recommending You to spare much time to create only very basic live project, which will only contain The most important system files to enable YOu to use sound sub system and NVDA screen reader. Use portable applications, which do not have to be specially integrated to The live PE by adding some services or complex registry settings, You will spare many MB of RAM. It is much more better to have one USB stick full of portable APPS organized to The smart folders structure, so You can use explorer to find The right app. The direct downloads links for Microsoft Safety Scanner are here for You. Download regularly when program will prompt You to do so. I like this Microsoft programmers work. 32 bit variant of Microsoft Safety Scanner is available here http://definitionupdates.microsoft.com/download/definitionupdates/safetyscan... X64 bit variant of this tool is available here http://definitionupdates.microsoft.com/download/definitionupdates/safetyscan... I will send some other live PE projects customized for visually impaired users of screen readers.
