Re: [Blind-sysadmins] Problems with a size of the C partition
Hi,
Not diskpart, Partition Magic or try again with the latest Dell utilities, these give you the later driver versions as well.
Do you know which version of the Dell utilities you were using?
The other thing is just live with it - most servers I build have two partitions - one for OS, and one for data, though I think 5GB may be a bit tight for W2k3.
Andrew.

Thanks, is there a diskpart.exe command to expand the partition? Here is the results of CHKDSK, the size of the allocation units seems incorrect me but I don't think the Dell utility gives me an option to change
Thanks, I did download the demo and it will not install on Server 2003. I also tried reinstalling the OS in a RAID 1 configuration, as opposed to the RAID 0 I tried last time. The same thing happened. There are two 250gb drives in the array. Disk management reports the C partition as being 231.8gb, which would be correct (this being the "DM disk view in disk management). The properties of the C drive as reported by Windows Explorer shows the capacity as 5gb and I cannot use any of the rest of the space (226 or so GB). I found the drivers for the Dell 5ir controller on the support.dell.com site. I installed them with no difference. I could not find the ISO image of the latest Dell setup disk. After identifying it as a SC440 and a 5IR controller I don't see any links to disk images. I was thinking of installing the drivers onto a floppy and hitting F6 after booting from the Windows disk. How can I set up the drivers on the floppy or can I just copy the .exe files onto the floppy? Thanks for all of your suggestions. Hi,
Buy default, the Dell management software will create an initial partition for the OS, but leave the remainder of the disk blank. Older versions of the software (up to 4.5 I think) used to allocate 5GB by default, whereas from 4.5 that went up to 12GB.
Thanks. Andrew.

Hi all, I am currently rebuilding a Dell SC440 with a RAID controller and two attached SAS 250gb drives. Originally we had these configured as a mirrored pair. Now that we are reinstalling we ran the Dell setup utility (with a borrowed pair of eyes) and configured it as a stripped pair of drives. We installed Windows Server 2003 and the install went well. We now have a huge problem that I can't seem to find a cure for with Google. In either Disk manager or Diskpart.exe the size of the drive is reported at around 470GB, all allocated to the C partition, which is what I would expect to see. Howegver, the properties of the C drive as reported in Windows Explorer show the C drive with only a capacity of 5gb! I tried converting from Basic to Dynamic with no change. When trying to install anything I get an out of disk space error since it is only recognizing the first 5gb of the C partition. Does anyone have any ideas on what to go so that Windows 2003 will see the entire size of the C partition? Thanks Frank

Hi, On the Dell website, go to the SC440, then in the categories, the files are under systems management. You need to download the 5.5.0 DVD ISO (assuming you have a DVD rom drive), and the ISO containing the firmeware updates. The firmware update DVD can be used in Windows or from within the systems management bootable disk. If you have a CD drive only then you need to download an older version of the software, 5.3, again it is on the same page. Hello, Is it possible to run a full version of jfw10 off a thumb drive? Fs's docs say you need a locally installed auth key or a network server. I was wondering if it is possible to install the key on the thumb drive. Dave.
Hi, Last time I looked this was not possible, the best they came up with was that you could use the thumb drive with the dongle, meaning two USB ports!! I asked whether they would ever do a dongle with the integrated flash memory for the thumb drive, I didn't get an answer to this. Hello, I'm sorry for all the questions: Do any of you have a way of installing Windows 2008? A generic answer file or something like that would be fantastic. I kind of already know this is not going to be easy, but have you any way of accessing a SCSI controler? I need to set up RAID on two servers. At the moment, I really need to find a way of doing as much as possible without sighted assistance. Do you have any suggestions for me that would aid in the accessibility of racking a Dell 1U server into a dell rack? Do you have any tips that would make it easier to patch the server also? Even if these aren't quick fixes, if there's work involved in making the environment more accessible, I'm willing to put in the work. The only problem is there are a hell of a lot of server rooms with a lot of racks and servers. I'm having problems using Jaws in all VMWare ESX servers. The mirror driver won't install on any of them. Any suggestions as to how I can get around this? The VMWare VSphear application is reasonably accessible but the tab control for navigating around pages doesn't work with the keyboard. I have to mess around to access everything. Have any of you used it? If so, have you created scripts for Jaws to make it easier to access? I could do it if I had the time, but at the moment, I really don't. Racking these two servers, cabling them and setting up RAID independently is my major worry at the moment. The thing is, I have no choice but to do it independently as I'm being tested to make sure I can do the job that I've just been given. I'm really hoping you can help with these questions. If not, I'm going to have a bigger challange on my hands than I do already. Thanks Darragh

Hi, Ideally one person shouldn't be racking a server. Actually round here we can't do this due to health and safety regulations, due to the servers being over a specific weight. Each generation of Dell Poweredge has a different racking mechanism and cable tidy mechanism, if you are going to experiment try a rack that is either not populated or only has a few servers, as the more populated the more difficult it is, or the more chance you will pull something else (usually a cable under tension anyway). When I first started I had to rack some test servers which were Poweredge 2650. These used screws to hold the rack rails in place, and the cable tidy mechanism hooks on the back of the rails. The whole process is a real pita, because you have to route the cables through the cable tidy mechanisms. You really need two people to actually place the servers in the rack, when you do this try and find out exactly where the holding screws are on the sides of the server in relation to the holes on the rack. The newer servers are a lot easier now, and apparently don't use screws. As the racks have become more populated I have bowed out of this one unfortunately. Patching cables is not as difficult unless people don't follow the rules (i.e., unpatch cables when not in use, keep the docs up to date). If you know the location on the patch panel where you need to plug in the cable, then it is just a case of plugging one end into the relevant port on the panel (in our case these are sequentially numbered), and the other end into the correct port on the switch. Take care to ensure you plug into the correct switch and correct port (due to Vlans etc). I use keystroke memory to get into the RAID bios and control it. I know the number of disks in the server, and the controls are using the arrow keys and enter, which is better than the mouse obviously. I am playing around with the replication features on the Dell build and update utility, although this seems to be very model specific, and lots of our servers round here have differing drive configurations anyway. There is no denying that you have picked for me some of the worst issues I faced, like most things if you are determined there will be ways round it, some of them probably involving getting team working in place. Thanks. I just asked about configuring RAID on a Dell server on the Dell linux list. The best advice I got was to ask your sales rep to pre-configure it before shipment. I actually did that by accident. I had some technical discussions with our sales rep about configuring RAID and much to my surprise, the RAID controller came pre-configured. So you might check if maybe you got lucky too. I have not tried the other suggestions I got for configuring the RAID. Apparently, you can set serial output in the BIOS and then use a terminal emulator and a null modem cable to configure RAID. Somebody sent me a series of keystrokes that will supposedly configure the BIOS for serial output but I haven't tried them yet. Then there is the DRAC, Dell Remote Access Console. You may be able to talk to that via a cross over ethernet cable. I intend to try this eventually one way or another because I think its important to know how to access the DRAC. Also, I plan to make a modified grml CD to include dellomsa and start software speech by default. The idea is that you could insert the CD, plug in a USB headset, boot the machine, and use the command line omconfig to do whatever configuration you need to do. Another thing I plan to look into is seeing if I can just add a speakup enabled kernel to the bootable CD that Dell supplies. But I only got my server a couple of days ago and haven't really had time to do anything but boot into vinux. PS: If you don't know about vinux, you should check it out. I hadn't tried it until yesterday but it booted my new Dell server with sppech w/o me having to do anything but boot from the CD. Google "vinux download" for more info. PPS: The Dell linux user's list is at linux-poweredge@dell.com. You run Windows but you may be able to pick up some tips anyway. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Darragh.OHeiligh@Oireachtas.ie> To: "Blind sysadmins list" <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Sent: Tuesday, April 20, 2010 6:30 AM Subject: [Blind-sysadmins] Various accessibility questions and installingWindows 2008.
Hello,
I'm sorry for all the questions:
Do any of you have a way of installing Windows 2008?

Hello again, I am looking for an application that I can run locally that will let me see SNMP alerts. I need to see the not so major things as well as the more obvious like servers not responding within a certain amount of time for example. I need to see when disks run low on space, processor utilization is high over a sustained amount of time, particular services stop responding etc. The company uses What's up gold however I find it really hard to get this information from the web interface. Any suggestions? Darragh
Install Linux and run something like rivermuse or opennms. http://www.opennms.org Very complex tool but does everything you want plus more. Also has built in alerting. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Darragh.OHeiligh@Oireachtas.ie> To: "Blind sysadmins list" <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Sent: Tuesday, April 20, 2010 8:36 AM Subject: [Blind-sysadmins] SNMP alerts. Good morning, The Dell open manage interface seems to be only accessible via the web. This hasn't bothered me as I haven't had to use it for anything at all. However, now, unfortunately, I need it. And guess what/ It's Java based! Have any of you found an accessible method of accessing dell open manage? Thanks darragh
Hi, You can access the individual server Dell OpenManage pages on https://servername:1331 and this isn't Java based. The old discontinued IT Assistant is Java based, the new Dell console solution isn't Java based but has its own issues. Thanks. THANKS FOR YOUR RESPONSE John, I think Linux maybe my best option for configuring RAID as the Dell utility CD is really not a runner. I've used Vinux quite a bit and have recorded a number of walk through's on it at www.lalrecordings.com I'd love it if we were using Linux here but alas, it's a very windows orientated company. Hi all, does anyone know how I can tell if the Exchange on our SBS 2003 server has Sp2 installed? Also if it is not installed how can I get it? I didn't see it on http://update.microsoft.com Thanks Frank
Hi, Assuming you are sending this mail through your Exchange server, there is the line in the headers: X-MIMEOLE: Produced By Microsoft Exchange V6.5.7235.2 That is a Service Pack 1 version. If on SP2, Microsoft doesn't specify the version of Exchange in the headers like this. Exchange service packs aren't offered up on MU due to the issues in complex environments. So far as I remember it was just a case of downloading the service pack, doing an offline backup of the mail store (I could have done an online backup but in those days I tended to do offline backups since we had very small databases on this home system), and applying it. A significant change with the SP2 was introduction of full push mail support, and the IMF component that acted as an antispam checker. I never used the later feature, however. Read the readme first, your AV product needs to support SP2 if it integrates with Exchange. This is fully supported on SBS 2003 without any special installer or anything. Thanks. Andrew. -----Original Message----- From: blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of Frank Ventura Sent: 24 April 2010 18:47 To: Blind sysadmins list Subject: [Blind-sysadmins] SBS 2003 and Exchange Sp2 Hi all, does anyone know how I can tell if the Exchange on our SBS 2003 server has Sp2 installed?
