Accessing Windows 8 Client-side hyper-V using a screen reader
Hi all, Has anyone figured out an accessible way to access Hyper-V virtual machines located on a computer running windows 8.1 client-side Hyper-V? I would think, that since unlike VMware, who offers virtual soundcard emulation, it would not be possible accept via RDP to the VM. Is that what you guys do during tests? I'm asking because I'd like to use Hyper-V on my Dell Laptop for a presentation I'm giving next month at a user group meeting. Thanks.
Hi, Good to see you in the group. Yup, I do everything by RDP or SSH. Access via the console is pretty much dead. Hi, Install HyperV roll on the client, run the HyperV manager, set up virtual network switch, get ISO of your favourite operating system, create virtual machine, create virtual hard drive, start up VM, then install using your tools of choice. I have a bit of sight so I do use this during the installation, you could use answer files though if you mounted a second ISO. You can also use the labs from Microsoft with pre-built Windows images on them. Warning with JFW, you are going to need a dongle as the activation system goes crazy when you add/remove VMS. Agreed. VMWare Workstation and Fusion are the only products I know of where access to the console is possible. I also really like the Easy Install feature in Workstation and I think Fusion too where you point it your VM at an ISO, tell it the edition of the OS you want, give it a product key and it just goes and builds the system for you and installs the drivers. So, when you're done all you have to do is install your screen reader. Random HyperV note, I don't know about JAWS, but Window-Eyes works horribly in the HyperV console. Half of the treeviews will read the index but not the item in the treeview, making selecting a VM or altering settings difficult. Its all doable through Powershell, but I don't know too much about that as we're a VMWare shop where I work. Hi, The guy is genuine - I've known him for over 20 years so I'd be more than happy to vouch for him, he's just not that good at marketing. Not convinced about the legalities of the product either - E.G. it ships with NVDA and Eloquence. I'd be more comfortable with it if he used eSpeak and gave a percentage of the price to nvaccess as a thank you gesture. I surpose it depends on what you want really. If you're after a nice gui to make an unattended install then at the right price it would make sense to buy, but if you're not bothered about nvda and you don't mind doing a bit of hacking - E.G. making an answer file and testing in a vm until you've got it right, it has very little to offer for you. Bryan Smarts project is also something else to consider; it's not as complete a solution as Winstaller and it's also in a bit of a grey area legally, but for free you can't really complain. Perhaps give it a spin on a spare system then if you don't like it buy Winstaller. Also bare in mind that Bryans project is useless and Winstallers functionality is very limited if they are unable to find sound drivers. Cheers, Ben. Ryan

Hi,
Good to see you in the group.
Yup, I do everything by RDP or SSH. Access via the console is pretty much dead.
Andrew.

Thanks.

Go to http://levtec.linkpc.net/info Winstaller and core recovery are a beautiful thing. Levi's really nice, and he'd not hurt a fly. I have regular conversations with him on Twitter on a regular basis, and he added me to Skype. Also, check out his ram manager (very helpful especially on slow computers) and his Wim Archiver; you'll never want to create a zip file again. -----Original Message----- From: Blind-sysadmins [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of Andrew Hodgson Sent: Saturday, November 02, 2013 7:39 AM To: Blind sysadmins list Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] Accessing Windows 8 Client-side hyper-V using a screen reader Hi, How do you guys find Winstaller?
