sharing files and printers, wireless, between 7 and xp
Hello, I've got a setup that I'm wanting to share some resources pc to pc. The router is a belkin f5d7231-4, it's wireless as well as having some ethernet ports. In to this a win7 home premium box is plugged. This box has attached to it two printers, one via parralel port it is a brother laser printer, the other via usb, but has wireless capability, an epson stylus nx400 it's a printer, scanner, copier and can as I said do wireless. The two other machines are windows xp laptops one here the other roaming but comes back. What I'd like to do is share some files from the 7 box and allow the xp machines to get to them, and to share files from the xp box and allow the 7 box to get at them. For the printers I'd like to share the laser attached to the 7 box and also to get the epson off of a USB connection to the 7 box and have it go full wireless so that all three machines can get to it. I don't have a domain, and I've understood that 7 does things differently in terms of sharing, I would use a workgroup setup if these were all xp machines. Suggestions welcome. Thanks. Dave.
When faced w/a situation like this, I created a network using an xp machine & just had the windows 7 box join it. I don't really think it makes any difference, though, just use the home group option in 7--u don't need a domain. I had a preexisting network for my xp machines, &, when I got the 7 box, it was easy to just have it join the network. On 12/31/12, David Mehler <dave.mehler@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi, The xp machines are mobile I'd rather use the 7 machine to make the network and have the xp machines join that. Can it work that way? If so, will that allow me to share the parallel laser printer attached to the 7 box with the xp machines? Will I need to load any drivers on to them? And same for the epson wireless? Thanks. Dave. It doesn't make a difference which way the networking goes. U share printers via the printers & faxes aplet. On 12/31/12, David Mehler <dave.mehler@gmail.com> wrote:

Hello,
I've got a setup that I'm wanting to share some resources pc to pc.
Thanks. Dave.

Hello, First of all my thanks to all who have helped so far. Good news, I have one of the two printers going, it's the brother laser attached directly to the 7 box. It is using an 64 bit driver under 7 so when sharing I had to tell it load the x86 driver and I had to load either the pcl or ps one I can't remember it found it, and it worked. I made sure file and printer sharing was allowed through the firewall, browsed to the pc, and did a connect, it worked great. My one problem with this setup is the printer won't be available when the 7 machine goes to sleep. The 7 box suggested a look in network and security center to fix this, I did but didn't see anything. If anyone has a shared printer going like this is there a fix for computer sleeping and network sharing? Can it wake up or just keep the printer available on the network? Haven't got to the dell yet, it's looking like that one is going to be the hard one since I have to download some drivers we can't find the original driver disk. Thanks. Dave. I don't have a domain, and I've understood that 7 does things differently in terms of sharing, I would use a workgroup setup if these were all xp machines.
Suggestions welcome.

Hi, No, you need to turn off the computer sleep function to get it to continue sharing. Thanks. Dave. No, the driver's folder on your Windows 7 PC will be made available. When you connect, the drivers will be pulled from that shared folder.

Hi, Unfortunately it may need work with the front control panel, or with the printer software installed via the USB driver. I have a similar printer here and I had to use the control panel to get it on the wireless network, luckily I could use WPS and didn't have to enter a key manually.
