Does anyone have experience installing windows server 2016 without any visual assistance? Specifically, I want to install in a virtual environment. Any pointers or documentation would be appreciated. Thanks. kp
You can't do it natively yet, I don't think, unless you use MDT, which requires a file server first to get the deployment shares working. I'd say use Packer with the Hyper-V builder or Google's Glazier.

Hi,
I use the patterns described here:

If packer can create images by itself, then why is Chef needed? I'm looking at this; I'm actually trying to use it in Hyper-V on a server, not under Vagrant.

Hi,
Chef is used to create the configuration on the bocx we're provisioning. So it does the work of installing the updates, setting up some streamline processes etc. It isn't needed and if you want to take out those parts of the script then that should work. The previous iteration used a mishmash of Powershell scripts called Boxstarter, but as I am more familiar with Chef I prefer the Chef method. You could also code it yourself if you didn't want to install an agent on the boc.
Andrew.

Only problem seemingly with Chef in my case would be not having the space to run an extra CentOS 6 server.

Hi,
It uses Chef-zero so no server required.
Andrew.

Oh. Didn't know that Chef didn't require a server. I'll have to look at all of the different configuration options; I swear. Too many applications out there exist to do the same thing. And then I need to figure out how to use that template without using Vagrant; I'm trying to use it to install Windows 2016 without assistance, not as a development environment as the documentation seems to advertise. I'd love to useMDT, but until I can get file servers going ... that's sort of out.

Hello,
Couldn't you have Vagrant create the virtual machines required with the
template, and then use the Hyper-V mmc to export the virtual machines? To
me that seems like the simplest way to go about this process. I have done
this before with great success.
Regards
David Thomas

Right, but why use Vagrant at all? That's what I'm trying to get at.
