Jaws and Skype for Business
Hi All, The company I work for Is soon switching to Skype for Business as the internal communication tool from Cisco Jabber. As you may know, Skype for business is a rebranding of the older Lync software. Does anyone have experience of its accessibility and any additional steps one must take to enhance the usability of this? I know that there are some scripts around, but wanted to get peoples' thoughts. Thank you Chamandeep Singh Grover
You get plenty of sounds, but no vocal feedback whenever a notification is in the taskbar. I miss tons and tons of chats that way. -----Original Message----- From: Blind-sysadmins [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of Chamandeep Singh Grover via Blind-sysadmins Sent: Friday, June 01, 2018 11:03 AM To: Blind sysadmins list <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Cc: Chamandeep Singh Grover <cmusic789@googlemail.com> Subject: [Blind-sysadmins] Jaws and Skype for Business Hi All, The company I work for Is soon switching to Skype for Business as the internal communication tool from Cisco Jabber. Hi, I generally find it works really well, and much better than the Cisco stuff. I find the issue of not having a proper feedback notification system for these types of clients really annoying, I have it with both Slack and Skype where I miss stuff coming in. Thanks. Andrew.
Teams is glorious for that. After all, if you get Teams, then, you've got much more than Skype ever gave. -----Original Message----- From: andrew@hodgson.io [mailto:andrew@hodgson.io] Sent: Friday, June 01, 2018 1:58 PM To: blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org Subject: [Blind-sysadmins] Re: Jaws and Skype for Business Hi, I generally find it works really well, and much better than the Cisco stuff. Hi, How are you finding Teams? What are you using to access it, the Teams client? I moved to Teams with my last job and didn't enjoy the experience much from Slack, but at my new job it is still being evaluated. Thanks. Hi, I love Skype for Business. I would be lost without it at work and I don't think I have ever missed a message coming in. Not sure what the problem is with those who have reported this as an issue here but I always get a vocal notification from JAWS whenever a new chat window pops up because someone has pinged me. I can't remember the exact phrase but JAWS says something like: "Message from John Smith, press Windows plus A to accept" I have even managed to get a little bit out of screen sharing by reading the shared screen area with the JAWS OCR. Obviously, you need to be sure the sharing person has a still screen before doing it but this can work a little bit at least. I have though many times shared my screen to get colleagues to help me with certain inaccessible things in our company's Intranet that I have to use such as expenses claims for example. This is brilliant as I can let them have control to do the bit I am unable to do due to accessibility issues. I think you will love Skype for Business. Have no fear. Cheers, Phil. -----Original Message----- From: Blind-sysadmins [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of Katherine M. Hi, If you're running the combination of JAWS 2018 and Office 365, incoming chat messages should speak both when a conversation is in focus and/or it's been minimized. You also get an announcement the first time someone else starts a new conversation with you. If you're running the MSI version of Office, no such luck. The UIA infrastructure needed for JAWS to detect this info was added to Skype For Business after the MSI version shipped and the code was not back ported. If your expirience is not as I outlined above, please reach out to me off-list so that we can get to the bottom as to why. Hi Not Andrew but my work has Slack enterprise & I'm totally blind. My experience is that Slack have this uncanny ability to write things up in a way that makes them sound a lot better than they actually are. If we take the hotkeys page for example, I simply can't get any of them to work using the desktop app and multiple screen readers with passthrough enabled. Support have been amazing (probably the best support experience I've ever had) but in the end it all boiled down to them not being able to duplicate my problems & I decided that my time would be better spent trying to work with a thirdparty client than trying to get the desktop version working. It would be fair to say that in the past 4 months or so Slack have made some tangible accessibility improvements, the most obvious one being the message list. Having said this, the message list frequently scrolls back to the begining of the history (2 weeks) which makes it really hard to read recent messages & the message list is only one component of the app; things like DM's and threads are still essentially unusable for example. It's also incredibly cumbersome to sign in to multiple teams which is more or a less a requirement for me. I work in a mobile team & have fairly extensive knowledge of Android / iOS as a result. I'm fast thinking the solution for me will be to run the Slack app in the Android emulator & just use it like that. Early investigations suggest that this should be viable, but the main problem with stuff like this is that I either have to do it in my own time or take time out of my working day to do it, neither of which are overly desirable. If you told my colleagues that they'd have to run an emulator to use a specific messaging platform on their computers nobody would use it, but as blind people it appears that this is something that we just have to put up with. Cheers, Ben. On 6/4/18, Glen Gordon <GGordon@vfogroup.com> wrote:

Hi, We have Slack Enterprise but it is hosted by Slack. I have similar problems to Ben though if my chat history goes to the beginning again it is by several months as we have the paid for offering with full archiving. I mainly use the web interface and am sketchy on availability because of this which causes problems with some teams being able to contact me. I am not going down the route of using the Android emulator though have found the mobile apps are the best way to access it so far. Most of the users use the desktop client which is a joke for us. Thanks. Andrew. ________________________________________ From: Glen Gordon [GGordon@VFOGroup.com] Sent: 04 June 2018 23:21 To: Blind sysadmins list Subject: [Blind-sysadmins] Re: Jaws and Skype for Business Andrew, Are you running Slack through Slack.com (I'm not even sure if an on-prem version exists.) I'm still working my way through the Slack desktop too for the same reasons you outlined. I have found that if I control my settings through my mobile (examples like which channels to mute, which to get notifications from) that seems to work best. Control brings a list box where you can jump directly to a conversation/direct message/channel. When I get there, I have found that starting from the bottom works better since like you, I get every single message ever written. The letter I or shift+I jumps to messages. Haven't quite figured out how to direct message someone yet on either mobile or desktop app. I wind up using both mobile and desktop because, mobile version tells me which channel the message came from while the desktop notification does not. If you are in the right channel. Much easier to reply than on the mobile. Thanks. Andrew. ________________________________________ From: Glen Gordon [GGordon@VFOGroup.com] Sent: 04 June 2018 23:21 To: Blind sysadmins list Subject: [Blind-sysadmins] Re: Jaws and Skype for Business Andrew, Are you running Slack through Slack.com (I'm not even sure if an on-prem version exists.) I ask because I'm wondering how you're finding their latest accessibility improvements. Things seem much better to me but I'm not using it for regular activities and wanted another angle. --Glen Glen Gordon VFO | Vice President & Chief Technology Officer 11800 31st Court North, St. Petersburg, FL 33716 T 727-299-6230 ggordon@vfo-group.com www.vfo-group.com -----Original Message----- From: Andrew Hodgson <andrew@hodgson.io> Sent: Monday, June 4, 2018 4:35 PM To: Blind sysadmins list <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Subject: [Blind-sysadmins] Re: Jaws and Skype for Business Hi, In my old job I was using Office 2013 MSI so that explains the issue there for me missing some messages. We have Skype for Business at the new place but mostly use Slack. Sorry about the delay in messages, all sorted now. Thanks. Andrew. -----Original Message----- From: Glen Gordon <GGordon@VFOGroup.com> Sent: 02 June 2018 00:12 To: Blind sysadmins list <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Subject: [Blind-sysadmins] Re: Jaws and Skype for Business Hi, If you're running the combination of JAWS 2018 and Office 365, incoming chat messages should speak both when a conversation is in focus and/or it's been minimized. (It's not that I object to you saying this to the list, only that it will rapidly get into the specifics of your system and why things aren't as expected.) --Glen Glen Gordon VFO | Vice President & Chief Technology Officer 11800 31st Court North, St. Petersburg, FL 33716 T 727-299-6230 ggordon@vfo-group.com www.vfo-group.com -----Original Message----- From: Andrew Hodgson <andrew@hodgson.io> Sent: Friday, June 1, 2018 12:52 PM To: Blind sysadmins list <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Subject: [Blind-sysadmins] Re: Jaws and Skype for Business Hi, I used it with the voice part whilst at my previous job and it worked very well without any scripts so I don't think you will have a problem really.
