Looking for an accessible NAS
Hi all, I am new to this list because i just found out that this list exists. I am Simon Eigeldinger from Austria. I work in the IT business for a year now in our town hall. We have some NAS around from 2 manufacturers. 4 newer boxes from QNAP which aren't much accessible on the web interface. and 2 old buffalo terrastations which are pretty old but still work which are more accessible because of the old web interface. I also had a look at the synology web interface which can be checked out on their website. I kind of liked their interface and since DSM 6.0 i read it is more accessible and pretty well useable with a screen reader. What do you think? Greetings and thanks, Simon Mit freundlichen Grüßen Simon Eigeldinger Informatik Nebengebäude 1, OG1 Stadt Hohenems Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Straße 4 6845 Hohenems Österreich Tel.: +43 5576 7101-1143 Fax: +43 5576 7101-1149 E-Mail: simon.eigeldinger@hohenems.at<mailto:simon.eigeldinger@hohenems.at> Web: www.hohenems.at<http://www.hohenems.at> Diese Nachricht und allfällige angehängte Dokumente sind vertraulich und nur für den/die Adressaten bestimmt.
Hi Simon. My personal favourites have always been the nas devices made by WD. when I asked the same question on this list a while ago, the majority of responses also said WD. The synology interface still seemed clunky from a screen reader point of view when I tested the web interface on their site, maybe that's changed? Mo. On 31/03/2017 08:54, Eigeldinger Simon wrote:

I'm really happy with my WD MyCloud EX4 Ultra; however adding application and user via Web interface is hard with Jaws. 2017-03-31 11:33 GMT+03:00, Steve Nutt <steve@comproom.co.uk>:

Hi, What i am concerned about is the tight integration in the WD ecosystem. The WD My Cloud storages seem to connect themself to the wd servers and opens up a remote connection to enable file sharing and remote access. I don't know if this is a good idea that WD manages that over their own servers instead over the device itself with port forwarding and web browser access. Recently they also had issues with security according to the Heise IT news site here in germany/austria. They recommended to lock the wd devices down so the device doesn't connect to the internet. The cause where some serious bugs in the wd firmware and i also guess the wd ecosystem. I also read some amazon reviews also from the more higher rated wd my cloud systems like the EX2 ultra that some pro users have some security concerns with no https and the heavy usage of the servers of wd. One guy turned off the cloud features though when he started using wd sync the nas turned on the cloud services automatically without notifying him. Hi Steve, Hi Mo, I forgot to tell you as well that we have a WD My Cloud Mirror Gen 2 for the fire brigade. I have set it up and it was pretty easy to do. Though it seems not to have much features and seems pretty basic in its functionality. So basically for the average joe so to speak. So which one would be more useful? Would use it in a private environment though the my cloud mirror seems to be pretty boring. Maybe i haven't looked much into the apps that might be on their app store. HI. Glad to hear the synology gui has improved. I've got an old one but when upgrading my NAS last year, I decided to just get a small office class server and run Linux on it. I guess since you mention the raspberry pi, you know your way round linux. I wouldn't use a raspberry pi as a NAS, other than maybe for experimentation. Unless things have changed in the latter models, I have an old pi, the usb and network port share the same bus. Also I've never found it that reliable. There are some Linux distrobutions aimed at providing a NAS solution out of the box, Freenas being one. It's quite resource hungry as it uses the ZFS filesystem. Also I didn't like the gui much and am personlly fed up of fighting with guis to get stuff done. If you're interested, What I actually use is, is an HP Proliant Gen8 Microserver. I'm using virtual machines but could have just stuck Ubuntu server on it. I maxed out the RAM to 16gb and run a HP provided custom image of vmware esxi offf an internal usb stick. Leaving the 4 disks for vms and storage. The esxi interface has some issues of it's own but in my case as I use VMWare workstation, I'm able to use it's interface and connect to the vms to make any virtual hardware changes. The NAS, well file server, vm is Ubuntu Server 16.4 running Samba and plex. I could have put Owncloud on there too if I wanted a web interface. I manage the vms otherwise via ssh. Regards. Hi Chris, Well on the Pi side they have as far as i know now in the pi 3 mapped the lan port to its own connection. though its still 100 mbit. I thought of getting a Synology DS216J or something like that. Its mainly just for private use so no company data. though i wonder if i should wait if the DS217J might come out. I also would just use 2 disks which do raid 1 mirroring. qnap and wd seem to fall out of the frame because wd seems not to care much about privacy and makes use of their own servers to access the data on the nas very heavily and some security problems that came up recently and qnap being inaccessible in their web interface. meaning unlabeled buttons and problematic file lists. Hi all,
I am new to this list because i just found out that this list exists.
Greetings and thanks, Simon

Hi, I am looking at getting a 2017 model when it comes out, but I would avoid the J models as they use very low power processors, I always go with an Intel processor if possible. I am on a 214Play currently which was the cheapest Intel model I could get a the time, it is a 2 bay unit. You can quite easily run your own stuff on their as it is Intel, but the consumer units are a bit locked down in terms of Linux access, some of the business grade units come with a full Bash shell. It depends on what you want to do with it I guess. Hi Andrew, I also might wait until the 2017 models come out. I am not in need of one that badly that i would just buy something. I wonder which processors they will use in the 2017 models. Let's see what happens. The accessibility of DSM 6.1 at least is pretty good according to the test i did on the demo site using Firefox and NVDA. I am new to this list because i just found out that this list exists.
Greetings and thanks, Simon

Interesting. I have the 2011J model. Which I boostrapped to get a package manager and bash shell. I really like the synology boxes as products and were it not for other use cases, may well have got one again, now DSM has improved. My J model worked / works perfectly fine for me but I'm the only one using it and it doesn't do any significant processing, plex on the fly video rendering type stuff. You can quite easily run your own stuff on their as it is Intel, but the consumer units are a bit locked down in terms of Linux access, some of the business grade units come with a full Bash shell.
It depends on what you want to do with it I guess.

Hi Chris,
Well on the Pi side they have as far as i know now in the pi 3 mapped the lan port to its own connection. though its still 100 mbit.

Regards.

The Synology web interface is clunky with screen readers but I think you get a more professional NAS system overall. I would always go back to their products again.
The WD devices are consumer oriented and not really meant for business use.

Hi,
I am looking at getting a 2017 model when it comes out, but I would avoid the J models as they use very low power processors, I always go with an Intel processor if possible.

Hi Chris,
Well on the Pi side they have as far as i know now in the pi 3 mapped the lan port to its own connection. though its still 100 mbit.

Regards.

Hi,
The Synology web interface is clunky with screen readers but I think you get a more professional NAS system overall. I would always go back to their products again.
The WD devices are consumer oriented and not really meant for business use.

Hi all,
I am new to this list because i just found out that this list exists.
Greetings and thanks, Simon

Increasingly, yes. I don't know how reliable it is these days. Facebook have been using it - the principal BTRFS author, Chris Mason, now works there, and they have very demanding storage needs.
If you use something like a TerraStation WSS, you get the accessibility of Windows, since it's storage server to begin with, which is just a cut down version of Windows server itself. I normally use RDP to get to a portable copy of NVDA, intentionally placing it in a directory I can find by typing. I'm thinking about this as well too, so thanks for the mention. -----Original Message----- From: Blind-sysadmins [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of Jason White via Blind-sysadmins Sent: Friday, April 07, 2017 7:04 AM To: Eigeldinger Simon <simon.eigeldinger@hohenems.at> Cc: Jason White <jason@jasonjgw.net>; 'Blind sysadmins list' <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] Looking for an accessible NAS Eigeldinger Simon <simon.eigeldinger@hohenems.at> wrote:

Any NAS that can run OpenWRT (http://www.openwrt.org/) should be very accessible once OpenWRT is installed on it. You can either use ssh to access the shell prompt, which I usually prefer, or use the Web interface, which seems to be quite accessible with a screen reader. It can offer NFSv4, or SMB via Samba, thus giving you a choice of file systems. You also have a choice of Linux file systems for the hard drives or SSDs. RAID should also be supported, but I haven't tried it, as I run OpenWRT on a device that primarily serves as the router for my home network.
Hi, I thought OpenWRT was more of a router OS than a NAS OS, and ran on more router type hardware? If we're talking about using more server type kit, we could always start looking at some of the larger options, starting from something like UnRaid (not used it myself but it was accessible when I tried it a year or so back), FreeNAS (had some issues with access when I used it), or even some of the Windows Server NAS options. My understanding is that it serves both purposes these days. Also, anything running FreeBSD would be worth looking at, as you could then use ZFS for file storage, which I haven't had a chance to try, but I've read positive comments from people who have.
Hi Andrew, You can run OpenWRT on a Raspberry Pi as well. FreeNAS requires pretty recent hardware so i guess that might be pretty costly. *smile* OpenMediaVault was created by a guy who worked at FreeNAS but wanted to use something that wasn't that hardware hungry.
