Hello, Simple question here, how do user's tell which lights on a hub, or switch are active and their color? Thanks. Dave.
Dave, Many years ago when I worked on a switchboard, I had a light sensor able to read LEDS; it didn't distinguish colour, but it would be possible to identify a solid light from a flashing light? Let me know if you would like more detail. -----Original Message----- From: blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of David Mehler Sent: Thursday, 11 March 2010 1:25 PM To: blind-sysadmins Subject: [Blind-sysadmins] router lights Hello, Simple question here, how do user's tell which lights on a hub, or switch are active and their color? I have a tiny light probe which doesn't look out of place on my
keyring of keys, tools and thumbdrives. Its one of the most usefull
things I own and is responsive enough for testing flashing lights on a
switch and lodes of other things like that; I really suggest you
invest in one. Off the top of my head, I've used it for:
Switches and things like that
Testing laptop lcd's (Although its a bit hard to tell if there
cracked; just if there powering on)
Testing to see if desktops are posting
Testing little power lights on motherboards to confirm that the board
is getting power
Testing the lights on the front of cases to make sure that I've
connected those dreadfully annoying front panel connectors correctly
Like I say, one of the most usefull things I've ever owned and it was
actually my mum that saw it and promptly purchased it for me - I have
her fairly well trained you see.
Hth, Ben.

Most routers that I know of (at least carrier grade) will report everything
back that the lights indicate with the appropriate show command. For
example show interfaces ge-0/0/0 would show me link, throughput, carrier
status, errors etc.
What does the lights indicate that you can't get via the CLI?

Hi,
Thanks for your reply, that's definitely good to know. I was thinking
more of routers that are cheap switches that don't report back via a
cli interface.
Dave.

I think this
http://www.blindmicemart.com/product.asp?dept_id=20106&pfid=447275
is the same device that I have; I'm actually in the uk but couldn't
seem to find someware online that was selling it in pounds. Seems like
a bargain to me.

Ah, that or things like DSL adapters. I get it.
I was thinking carrier grade. All my gear is designed to be run entirely
lights out so I forget.:)
