securely wiping hard drives
Hello, I've got several old hard drives that I'm now wanting to get rid of. I need to securely wipe them. They connect to my computer via USB enclosure. I know about boot and nuke, but to the best of my knowledge and i'd love to be wrong, that doesn't work with access technology. Recommendations appreciated. I'm using windows 10 with NVDA 2017.4 and jaws 18. Thanks. Dave.
Hi, In Windows, I use and like Eraser https://eraser.heidi.ie/ Its source is open, it works well with Jaws and NVDA, and can erase entire drives/the free space on entire drives. As you are using a drive connected via USB, it should work for you. I have yet to see an easily accessible way of booting from external storage and wiping a machine's drives. This should be easily possible, but I have found, at least with the Windows PE setups available, that the drive wiping software in the PE is old, not fully accessible, fails to work on certain drives, or comes with all three drawbacks. If anyone knows of a bootable erasing method which is fully accessible, that is, which can be used by a totally blind user from beginning to end with status updates, and which makes its source available, I would be most grateful to hear of it. Hi The propper way to do this is to boot into Linux & use hdparm or similar to issue the secure erase ATA command. Since you're using USB & running Windows (2 things I wouldn't recommend for this) anything that will 0fill the drive will be fine. Cheers, Ben. On 3/24/18, Isaac <bigikemusic@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi, I have used KillDisk to do this under Windows with a USB enclosure before: http://www.lsoft.net/killdisk.aspx It is not free, I had a Data Studio license as I use the other tools in the suite. I would also say newer versions are slightly more difficult to use with JFW. I don't know any other Windows solutions and would recommend Linux if you want to do this free. Hi, Thanks. Linux is fine, though the drives have been reappropriated and won't need to be secure erased, in the future that might be needed again. I'll check out hdparm. Thanks. Dave. On 3/25/18, Andrew Hodgson <andrew@hodgsonfamily.org> wrote:
