Hi: Who here has SP1 installed in their SCCM 2012 environments? Microsoft told me last month there were major accessibility improvements in this version, but its taken me a while to get a test environment up and going. Our production environment is still on 2007 for obvious reasons, so I had to start from scratch in a test domain. Anyway, I'm not seeing a huge improvement in 2012 SP1 and was wondering if it was just me? Some of the controls that were not labeled before are now properly labeled. The ribbon still doesn't work at all but Microsoft admitted that to me. Quite a few lists, such as the all systems list and the list of boundaries don't read at all now. However, I'm wondering if this is an issue introduced in Window-Eyes 8.2, as this works properly in Narrator. In fact, the only lists that don't read properly now in Narrator are lists with only one item in them. And, that's another thing Microsoft admitted still wasn't working. So, I'd like to hear from others, particular other screen reader users, as to their experience with this? I'm going to go to GWMicro and find out why this no longer works in 8.2 anyway, but if it works fine in other screen readers, that is more of a push to them to fix this. Again, the lists I've tested are the list of all systems under device collections, and the boundary list under hierarchy configuration. Thanks. Ryan
The very first thing that I will suggest is that you don't install .net 4.5. I think you already know that thugh. I am now using SCCM 2012 in our production environment but it's incredibly difficult and it is by far the least efficient application I manage. I have been speaking directly with the SCCM developers. I believe that they are actively working on the issues we have submitted but any progress they are making is very slow. Matthew: I never looked at NVDA with the SCCM console, does it perform any better than Window-Eyes? I agree with you and Darragh that so far SCCM 2012 will be majorly less efficient for me to use than the current 2007 version we have installed. The current console is slow, but workable, and it is that way for everyone, screen reader or no. Fortunately, my company has never been a big user of SCCM, even before I started it was kind of those "we also have this" things and is mainly used to distribute Windows Updates and to run hardware/software inventory. I've done a few software deployments with 2007, and I have one DCM rule I created to track some server audits we do, but really SCCM is a small part of our work flow. That's why I've been able to get away with holding off on upgrading for as long as I have. I won't be able to forever, but its not a project I see on my project list anytime soon, thank goodness. Still, I'm keeping a very close eye on this. Assuming that the SCCM 2012 console became fully accessible, meaning all controls read properly, there'd still be some major efficiency problems, I'm sure you both have noticed just how many tabs it takes to get around that UI. Why Microsoft went and put the ribbon into the tab order I will never know. However, I have the disadvantage of only working in a test environment, you and Darragh can probably talk much better about what challenges a blind person faces managing actual clients day to day. Thanks. Ryan
