accessible router recomendations
Hi: I am moving into a new home, and as part of the process tossed out my relyable but old Airport Extreme router that I’ve had for the past few years and am looking for something new. Was wondering if there were recommendations on good, accessible routers that would be worth looking into? I do not know who my ISP will be yet so am just sticking to plane routers for now and am mainly looking for feedback on some good accessible options I can look at. I’d like something on the advanced side but perhaps not quite enterprise grade, but something that will give me features to play with but also let me get going relatively quickly. Thanks a lot. Ryan
Ryan, Mikrotik is a good choice if you want the option of CLI management. Are you still in Seattle? If so, you can use them with Centurylink (If configured properly) but IPV6 is a bit more fiddly because of 6rd. I imagine Astound, Google Fibre, Ziply, and Comcast (with a connected modem) would also work well. Bill Sent from my iPhone

Hi Bill, thanks a lot I'll give them a look. CLI management would be nice, a well designed and accessible web portal would be good too. I've left Seattle I'm now in the Colorado Springs area, but I think they have many of the same providers, I'm still figuring out exactly who I'll go with. Thanks again. I would suggest have a look at Ubiquiti or Draytek. The former I prefer for its command line interface though the web interface can do a lot. The latter is okay once you get used to it. I am using Windows and mainly jaws. Cheers Chris Turner Sent from mobile.

Hi. Be aware that on Ubiquiti its just the Edge routers that have the CLI. The Unifi routers have SSH access into a Linux OS but I've never been able to do anything with the router with that access, the backend for this is quite complex with a Postgres database etc. Andrew. -----Original Message----- From: Chris T via Blind-sysadmins <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Sent: Friday, May 5, 2023 1:08 AM To: Mailing list for blind system administrators <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Cc: Chris T <ultimatethesecond@googlemail.com> Subject: [Blind-sysadmins] Re: accessible router recomendations I would suggest have a look at Ubiquiti or Draytek. Oh thanks for the info Andrew. I must admit it was just the edge variety I occasionally look after. Disappointing that you don’t get a standard Linux command line interface though. Cheers Chris Turner Sent from mobile.

Hi. You do get a Linux CLI but from what I know you are discouraged from using it and there isn't a way of configuring the network element of this like there is on for example an F5 or Cisco. This is on a Unifi Dream Machine. I did like the single config file on the PFSense even though it is in XML. Another option that has worked well for me in recent years is an OpenWRT-based router. It provides both a Web interface that was reasonably accessible when I last used it, and Linux shell access via ssh. I would suggest checking the openwrt.org Web site for current hardware compatibility details in deciding what to buy, should you take this path. Mine is a very old and outdated Linksys WRT1900AC device that will be upgraded sooner or later. I simply don't have a strong reason to upgrade yet. Nor have I decided whether to use OpenWRT next time, or to try an alternative.
