Best way to handle international connectivity for VPNs
Hey all, This is more of an IT/legal question rather than an accessibility question. I've got a few sites that are joined up together by VPN, and I'm trying to add another connection from a South african IP; my friend there says that she is not in control of her network equipment and that she is not allowed to make changes. She states that it's more an issue with government policy rather than anything related to the ISP itself; now how ISPs and government have anything to do with one another is quite a confusing concept to me being from the US where the tech is in control. I was hoping that I might be able to get some international awareness from someone here; I'd rather her join our project without upsetting anybody who could actually do something about us. I am fine if it has to be a client-side VPN connection for her; though if she can't open a port, which she says that she can't, I'm not sure what the hell to do in that case. Advice and education on this matter would be very much appreciated. Note also that there aren't many techs in her living situation; she is one of those people who is nervous by any sorts of changes that take place.
I think you need to get some verification. AS I am sure corperate organisations would use VPN's. What information would you recommend I get from her? Hi, If she is unable or unwilling to give you the details then you are really stuck aren't you. You state here that she isn't phased by technical issues, yet you state that she is not confident in making changes to her own computer. Depending on what you are trying to get her to access, it there nothing else you can put in place which means having a VPN is not necessary? Whoops? that was a typo. What I meant to say is that she is freaked out by anything technical. We have a file server and sharepoint portal in place for information sharing. She wants to participate in both of those in order to share information with us. Sure,, we could use Dropbox or some other thing like that, but then again, that neither integrates with our Active Directory infrastructure, nor teaches her anything. She evidently claims that she's not allowed to forward ports, again, citing ISP rules. My real question is whether she's just making excuses because she is nervous, or whether there is indeed a block that exists where the provider has to allow such activity; again, a foreign concept to me and my friends here in the US. I'd rather not get in trouble for trying to have some fun. Hi, I have never heard of anything like this before and I have stayed at someone's house in South Africa and they had a very specific router setup with Cisco gear. The router isn't likely to have a VPN client built-in especially if an ISP provider router. You could always set up SharePoint remote access via WAP/ADFS, and also look at something like Direct Access, which is a fabulous piece of kit, though not widely used in corporate environments. Thanks for the feedback. we might be forced to run WAP in order to get Sharepoint set up anyway in order for me to access on computers that don't have VPN access, so that might not matter in the end. Wish you could do that with file servers too,, then. I've got a few sites that are joined up together by VPN, and I'm trying to add another connection from a South african IP; my friend there says that she is not in control of her network equipment and that she is not allowed to make changes. She states that it's more an issue with government policy rather than anything related to the ISP itself; now how ISPs and government have anything to do with one another is quite a confusing concept to me being from the US where the tech is in control. I was hoping that I might be able to get some international awareness from someone here; I'd rather her join our project without upsetting anybody who could actually do something about us. I am fine if it has to be a client-side VPN connection for her; though if she can't open a port, which she says that she can't, I'm not sure what the hell to do in that case. Advice and education on this matter would be very much appreciated. Hi, Yes that is very possible. Think of Direct Access as a client side service to allow Windows clients to be able to access the network from outside, but you need site to site VPNs to connect the network together especially if you have AD servers across it. Andrew. Sent from my iPhone

I have never heard of anything like this before and I have stayed at someone's house in South Africa and they had a very specific router setup with Cisco gear.
The router isn't likely to have a VPN client built-in especially if an ISP provider router.
You could always set up SharePoint remote access via WAP/ADFS, and also look at something like Direct Access, which is a fabulous piece of kit, though not widely used in corporate environments.

Whoops? that was a typo. What I meant to say is that she is freaked out by anything technical. We have a file server and sharepoint portal in place for information sharing. She wants to participate in both of those in order to share information with us. Sure,, we could use Dropbox or some other thing like that, but then again, that neither integrates with our Active Directory infrastructure, nor teaches her anything. She evidently claims that she's not allowed to forward ports, again, citing ISP rules. My real question is whether she's just making excuses because she is nervous, or whether there is indeed a block that exists where the provider has to allow such activity; again, a foreign concept to me and my friends here in the US. If she is unable or unwilling to give you the details then you are really stuck aren't you. You state here that she isn't phased by technical issues, yet you state that she is not confident in making changes to her own computer.
Depending on what you are trying to get her to access, it there nothing else you can put in place which means having a VPN is not necessary?

Hmm interesting ... I knew there was something missing from our environment. now I know exactly what it was ... We were essentially misusing the Direct Access technologies; we thought that if server OSs have them as well, we could use it as a sort of site-to-site VPN. I've got a few sites that are joined up together by VPN, and I'm trying to add another connection from a South african IP; my friend there says that she is not in control of her network equipment and that she is not allowed to make changes. She states that it's more an issue with government policy rather than anything related to the ISP itself; now how ISPs and government have anything to do with one another is quite a confusing concept to me being from the US where the tech is in control. I was hoping that I might be able to get some international awareness from someone here; I'd rather her join our project without upsetting anybody who could actually do something about us. I am fine if it has to be a client-side VPN connection for her; though if she can't open a port, which she says that she can't, I'm not sure what the hell to do in that case. Advice and education on this matter would be very much appreciated.
