Measuring bandwidth home environment
Hi, Can anyone suggest a simple way of monitoring bandwidth used by specific devices on a network? I know that some top end consumer routers support snmp so I could use this in combination with some form of monitoring tool on another box, but mine doesn't so it's not an option. The solution I was thinking of was to turn off dhcp on my router, configure a box with 2 nic cards and bridge them using ics - one that connects to the router with a static and one that runs dhcp and is also connected to the router, there by forcing all the trafic on the network to go through my box. I know that products like ISA can do this, but this is just a home environment so I'm thinking installing something like 2008 to get ISA would be a bit overkill. We're moving to an ISP where we'll have a limited amount of transfer a month and whilst I don't really want a big brother type environment where I can see exactly what everyones doing, I would like something that I can use for a couple of months so that I can get a rough idea of how much we use and what devices are responsible for the bulk of our usage. Does anyone have any suggestions? All thoughts are welcome. Cheers, Ben.

Hi, I don't know much about php myself. I do no that the scripts will send you e-mails when you reach a cirtain amount. It also shows you the bandwith used per ipaddress on the network. Also it shows you how much you have used for a lifetime of that script. -----Original Message----- From: Blind-sysadmins [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of Ben Mustill-Rose Sent: Thursday, December 27, 2012 5:35 PM To: Blind sysadmins list Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] Measuring bandwidth home environment That would be great thanks, but are there any spaces in the code? Hi, That sounds interesting, but afaik PHP isn't capable of doing this on its own; it needs some tool to give it the data then it can put it into a pretty web interface. Could be wrong though. Cheers, Ben. On 12/27/12, MIKE <mmstopka28@gmail.com> wrote:

What about buying a cheap router with SNMP capability and running cacti? You can get a Mikrotek router for under 50 bucks that would do the trick. On Dec 27, 2012, at 7:13 PM, Ben Mustill-Rose <ben@benmr.com> wrote:

Hi, Cacti sounds promissing plus it looks like I'll be able to get it up and running on my raspberry pi which will be better than having a full blown system running it. I'm assuming you can get at the text as well as all the graphs it creates? I was thinking of buying a different router that supports snmp then just selling it after I was done with it but wasn't sure on the best monitoring solution so thanks for that. Cheers, Ben. Yes, cacti is like mrtg in that the displays have both text and graphics so you can read the important data with you screen reader with out any trouble. The nice thing about cacti over MRTG is you can measure much more granularly down to the second if need be so you'll capture microbursts etc. Very good diagnostic tool. Hi,
Can anyone suggest a simple way of monitoring bandwidth used by specific devices on a network?

Hi, Another solution to is that some of the Netgear and other routers have a bandwidth monitor function on them which by no means gives you as much details as for example Cacti, but will get the job done for this specific scenario. It also doesn't require an extra box. inSSIDer might not do everything you want, however I find it is a great tool to use on my wireless network at home. And much of the information is accessible to text to speech software. It works with Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7. The application detects wireless networks and report on their type, maximum transfer rate, and channel usage. I use this to see what channels other networks in range are using. Then I set up my routers to use channels that are not within range of other wireless networks.
