Hi all, I plan to get myself a NAS. I am thinking of the Synology DS216J. What do you think? We have QNAP NASs in the office which are unfortunately not very accessible with their Web GUI. We also have 2 old Buffalo DiskStations which still work though they are very old. their interface is also pretty accessible. I pretty like Synology's interface which you can also check out online: https://www.synology.com/en-us/dsm/live_demo Great when you can have a look at interfaces. Hi, Yes most of the NASs support SSH. I don't know if the WD My Cloud does but i could check on monday. Our fire brigade has one of those My Cloud Mirror boxes. though i guess i don't want one of those. though they might be interesting for my parents for example. people who like beautiful things that need nearly no config and you can't change much. they also seem to bind the user to their wd servers. Hi, I am a fan of Synology, but most of the NAS devices including Synology have hard to use web interfaces. I would also recommend getting an Intel powered Synology device if possible, or one that runs containers, as it is then easier to extend the device. Also some Synology devices run a more cut down operating system, my 214Play being one of them. Some of them have a full Bash, mine doesn't, which makes it harder to work with on the command line. Hi Andrew, Interesting. thought the diskstations come all with the same OS and the same ammount of software and features. thought just the processor and ram is different? oh and the hd bays. good you can't run all that much with the smaller ones like the j but thought the play would be pretty capable of doing things. especially they say for encoding stuff on. i also thought dsm 6.1 is very accessible? last time i tested it online i was pretty surprised how accessible and pretty modern it is. loads better than qnap and also the wd my cloud mirror interface. Hi, Yeah like I say Synology is really the best, just be sure you know what you want to use it for and choose the right model. For example if you get an ARM model you may not be able to run containerised software. There used to be a chart on the site with what models could do what. The Play version is pretty capable on the box but they cut down the OS advanced features - for example I can't run containers on my model even though the CPU is up to it. I think next time I may go for the Plus model even though it is more expensive. Not trying to put you off but just look at what you want to do with it and make the choice accordingly. Might have changed but the shell environment in Synology diskstations was Busybox. So you don't get all the usual commands and switches. On the other hand, I gather the gui has improved since i last looked 4 years or so ago. I still have my 2011 model as a secondry backup device. They're good little units. I started out about seven years ago with a pair of CS407e's, or maybe that was DS407e. Either way, it was a four-bay box, couldn't support more than 2TB devices, had a big 64-meg memory for OS and whatever, only 100mb single network, and those things just spun and spun and ran and ran all day long servicing an active FTP server. The DS1815+ with eight drives in it doesn't even get warm, not to mention not even breaking a sweat. The Web UI is a little crinkly with access technology, but you play with it enough and you can get your work done. On Sat, 14 Oct 2017 17:24:51 +0100, you wrote:

Hi all, I plan to get myself a NAS. I am thinking of the Synology DS216J. What do you think?
We have QNAP NASs in the office which are unfortunately not very accessible with their Web GUI. We also have 2 old Buffalo DiskStations which still work though they are very old. their interface is also pretty accessible.
I pretty like Synology's interface which you can also check out online: https://www.synology.com/en-us/dsm/live_demo
Great when you can have a look at interfaces.

Hi, I don't like how WD deals with your data. They are pretty service based so i guess all the data runs over their servers than over the internal infrastructure of the NAS itself. Greetings, Simon Am 14.10.2017 um 20:53 schrieb Can Kırca:

Hello, It depends your chois. If you enable wd2go account, you can use mobile application, otherwise, you can use ftp, http, ssh and all other protocols without WD company Access. For example, I have a static IP in my router and using FTP to Access my data's remotely. You can create password protected folders and gives different Access level to your users as well. Hi, Some of the more expensive NAS drives use Bash as the shell but yes you need to ensure you don't buy one with just Busybox as it limits you quite a bit. Hi, Some of the more expensive NAS drives use Bash as the shell but yes you need to ensure you don't buy one with just Busybox as it limits you quite a bit. So you don't get all the usual commands and switches. On the other hand, I gather the gui has improved since i last looked 4 years or so ago. I still have my 2011 model as a secondry backup device. They're good little units. Regards Chris Turner On 14/10/17 15:39, Steve Matzura wrote:
It does, but who needs to remember all the complicated switches and qualifiers to Volume Manager commands when the GUI works just fine and is quite usable?

The manufacturer's Web site suggests that it supports ssh, which should eliminate any accessibility problems.

Greetings, Simon

Any Synology product that uses their DiskStation Manager (DSM) software is usable if not totally and easily accessible. There are some oddball controls and the way DSM displays some things that open after a button is pressed leave a little to be desired, but by and large, it's a very workable and usable system. I have a DS1815+ here, and am thinking of getting a second one probably next year. I could, of course, spend that same money and increase the disk sizes in my current rig, but I have this thing about disks larger than 3TB using a different physical architecture that squeezes more platters into the same form factor disk case, not to mention putting more sectors/cylinders on each platter, all in the name of increased storage at the expense of lower physical tolerances.
