Hi Andrew,
This laptop came with win 10 as far as I know and was downgraded to win 7.
Seems the disk wasn't properly whiped.

Exactly. It is actually though valid to have a GPT partition in Windows 7 as it supports EFI, but it isn't a common configuration.
If I were you I would verify the laptop is booting via mbr and then delete the GPT from the disk.
