custom accessible backup media
Hello, I've got a dell that i'm working on that is not booting windows xp properly. It's not under any kind of waranty and a memtest shows it's ram is good, yet even booting windows in safe mode is producing a blue screen stop message 0xc2 message. A reinstall seems the best option. I'm planning on downloading dell drivers for this machine and creating an unattended xp installation disk, my problem is one of backup. This box has two Sata hard disks in it, that i'm not sure how much has been backed up, so before i can reinstall i have to back them up. I'm wondering an accessible solution for this, but also one that i can expand with the necessary sata controller drivers, i'm assuming they're intel of some variety. Thanks. Dave.
Hi, Try Vinux, if you can get the Ubuntu version it may be better although version 2.x on Debian should work. It will let you mount the disks and get the information off onto a USB drive. Hi, Thanks. Looking at Vinux now, it looks good, cli or GUI version? And when getting windows data cp or would there be something better? This data will have to be restored properly on to a windows box from this backup disk. Thanks. Dave. On 1/7/10, Andrew Hodgson <Andrew.Hodgson@allpay.net> wrote:

Hi, You can write the data to a FAT32 disk or network share and it will be fine. NTFS disks are a bit of a miss sometimes so I tend to use FAT32. You can restore it in Windows fine. Hello, Having an issue getting vinux to talk. I downloaded and burned a 2.1 iso cli-max 600 and something mb in size. I've got a usb audio device that i plug in, and did so and booted. On log in no speech, entering espeakup reveals the program is loaded. Any suggestions on why it isn't talking, i've done max to raise volume levels. I'd like to get a gui version, as well, but it looks like that's only available as a dvd image. Thanks. Dave. On 1/7/10, Andrew Hodgson <Andrew.Hodgson@allpay.net> wrote:

Hello, Does anyone have a list of the vinux beep codes? When the CD initially starts up i get a real long one maybe more than one close together, i'm assuming this is the boot prompt. Should i enter anything at this prompt for speech, as i said i've got a usb audio device so am looking for software speech. I don't enter anything and eventually the disk spins up and i get another beep this one a short one, no idea on this one. Thanks. Dave. On 1/7/10, David Mehler <dave.mehler@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi, The first beep is initial boot prompt, not sure about the second beep, but USB soundcards may be an issue, which is why I suggested using the 1.x version of Vinux which is based on Ubuntu and thus a later kernel/driver set than the Debian version which is version 2.x. Thanks.
