I think it should also be mentioned that there is so much gear on the used market / Ebay you can buy real hardware for pennies on the dollar. All you need are some moderately powerful routers like some 2600S or 3800S (other variations are certainly possible) and maybe some mid range switches like the 3750. There's a guy who sells complete Cisco lab kits for very affordable prices although I can't recall the link right now I'll check through my notes and see if I can find a pointer.

I fear I know the answer to this, but I'd rather not assume. I'm working on my CCNA course, and am curious if there's any way at all to do router simulations of any sort without having a physical device.
