All, I've got a couple of MSWindows boxes to talk to over RDP. I come from the linux world where other methods are standard but those methods aren't available for this project. I see that NVDA has an RDP plugin, but is that the way to go? Is there a solution that is more linux focused? Thanks in advance! --Will

Hi, The RDP add-on for NVDA does not do much. The best way to do this is to use a Windows machine to connect to the other Windows machines. NVDA must be installed on all of the machines for this to work. Then, have the Windows terminal services client pass the audio from the remote machines to your machine. This is not going to be anything like SSH, since Windows is graphical, rather than textual. This is also why you need to have NVDA installed on all machines. It just is not possible to have a locally installed screen reader interact with a remote Windows machine, unless you can afford the cost of a commercial screen reader or figure out how to use the NVDA remote add-on. I have no experience with either, so I can't be of much help with those. Hope this helps. On 9/1/2015 5:02 PM, Will Estes wrote:

Can you flesh out your process a bit? I've got some remote MSWindows boxes that have standard installs on them, so I'll need to install anything to make speech happen on them "from the ground up" (possibly with sighted assistance, depending on the method / software). Hi, you have few options here, but if you don't need braille and don't want to pay for assistive technology, I strongly recommend NVDA Remote. I am using it with succes on desktops on my customers, and in few servers with win 2003 and win 2008(R2). Main disadvantage with audioredirection is very high latency specialy if you are using it on a slow or vpn network. hth -- Cheers Michał Dziwisz michal@dziwisz.net

I am currently using NVDARemote on VMs at work. There is a bit of latency, because IT won't allow me to forward the necessary ports, so my Windows box can act as the server. I am therefore going through 'nvdaremote.com'. One reason it may not be working for some people, is that it seems that if the connection to the server is made, but that server can't coommunicate with the remote computer, you are not informed of this, you just don't get any speech when sending keys. I have however found that when the server can connect to the remote computer, the bleep sound to say that a connection has been made, is slightly longer. I had to get sited help to create the key on the remote VMs, and check the box to automatically connect to the server (in my case nvdaremote.com) on startup. Cheers, Jen.
