Accessible network simulator
Hello. Due to my study classes, I faced an interesting problem, which is inaccessibility of Cisco Packet Tracer, and lack of any accessible alternative as far as I investigated it. But, possibly somebody can suggest something about it: Is any way of enabling accessibility in Packet tracer, and constructing networks there? Maybe some other software is available to accomplish simulation of basic networks conssisting of few routers, some computers, switches and DHCP server? Probably something script-driven and working in console mode, or dumping textual results into file? I found a NS-3 simulator, but at the moment, didn't go deep in it, because I'm not sure if it'll work for me. Greetings, Greg.
Hi, Unfortunately, Packet Tracer is completely inaccessible. If you rely on a screen reader, you can pretty much forget about using it, unless you have very good sighted assistance. I know this sounds harsh, but it's the unfortunate truth. As far as alternatives are concerned, I found the same as you. In other words, there don't seem to be any easy to use alternatives. I'd say that your best bet is going to be to get a hold of some actual Cisco equipment, if possible. You may not have access to enough equipment to do all labs, but some is certainly better than none. The only good resource I know of with regard to Cisco as a blind or visually impaired person in general is CAVI. There web sight can be found at the following link. http://www.ciscovision.org/ Hope that helps. On 12/6/2015 6:24 AM, Grzegorz Zlotowicz wrote:

Hello. Thanks for your reply. So I'll try to investigate ns-3, because it's no wayof working on real equipment to achieve what I want. Thanks also for link to CAVI, but it seems they have nothing what I could use, apart from courses, they could offer paid access to some software tools for individual use if they have some. Hi, I overcame the issue by getting in some really old kit from Ebay. I don't think I paid much for the kit, around £100 or even less. The main issue was storing it all, and keeping the wiring tidy. Some of it eventually made it to my main network, but I mainly got really old routers and an old switch etc which weren't much use in the wild. All, dynamics is the only alternative solution. The only draw back is that you need to get access to the iOS images that it supports. Do a s search on the net. Sean

Thank you all for the replies. Sean, could you clarify a bit more the Dynamics and IOS solution? Maybe some link as starting point would be helpfull if possible. Searching for dynamics ios cisco, dynamic ios, and so on gives me different things, but nothing useful, e.g. how to make user interfaces for IOS 7, ios activity tracker for Dynamics CRM and so on.... Also I didn't understand the sentence: Do a s search on the net. Greetings, Greg. W dniu 07.12.2015 06:58, Sean Murphy napisał/a:

I believe and could be wrong here it’s Dynamaps and not dynamics but I’m more than happy to be corrected. The Dynamaps package is a power PC emulator used to run IOS images.

Scott, is correct. Some how the auto spell checker changed it and I missed it in my post. do a search for it. The program runs on a Mac and windows. You run a virtual machine first. Then you load the configuration that you build. You build the configuration in a text file that flinks the switches and routers together. Once the config is loaded, you connect to the switch or router via a telnet session. It can simulate frame relay. Basically all it allows you to do is to configure the frame-relay on the router and passes the relevant info to the other router. Be aware, you do not get full switch functionality but do get all router functionality at a CCNA and CCNP level. People have done their CCIE with this solution. Once you find the application, I can provide sample configs. But cannot provide the images to run. Sean

You only need the dynamips program only. Below is the scripts I use: The below script runs the simulator. cd /tmp ; sudo /Applications/Dynagen/dynamips -H 7200 The below script launches the config: sudo /Applications/Dynagen/Dynagen.app/Contents/Resources/dynagen $1 You have to run them in that order. The 1st script will run in its own window. the 2nd script runs in its own terminal window. Below is an example config: ############################################################# # # # Free CCNA Workbook GNS3 Topology v2.0 - 01-13-2011 # # # ############################################################# ### Disable Automatic Start of ALL devices ### autostart = False #debug = 1 ######################################## ### R1 Hyper-Visor and Configuration ### ######################################## [localhost] workingdir = /tmp [[3725]] #>>> CHANGE THE FOLLOWING IMAGE LOCATION TO THE CORRECT IMAGE ON EACH ROUTER AND SWITCH!!! <<<# #>>> FAILURE TO DO SO WILL RESULT IN GNS3 THROWING A FRAME RELAY ERROR WHEN ATTEMPTING TO <<<# #>>> LOAD THE FREE CCNA WORKBOOK TOPOLOGY CONFIGURATION FILE! <<<# # image = /Users/seanmmur/Documents/gsn3/ios/c3725-ipbasek9-mz.124-10.bin # image = /Users/seanmmur/Documents/GNS3LabProjects/ios/c3725-adventerprisek9-mz.124-15.T14.ext.bin image = /Users/seanmmur/Documents/GNS3LabProjects/ios/C3725-AD.BIN ghostios = True sparsemem = True nvram = 128 ram = 256 [[ROUTER R1]] model = 3725 console = 2001 aux = 2101 slot 1 = NM-16ESW wic0/0 = WIC-1T wic0/1 = WIC-1T wic0/2 = WIC-1T s0/0 = R2 s0/0 s0/1 = R3 s0/0 cnfg = ./config idlepc = 0x606ba1d8 [[ROUTER R2]] model = 3725 console = 2002 aux = 2102 wic0/0 = WIC-1T wic0/1 = WIC-1T wic0/2 = WIC-1T s0/1 = R3 s0/1 f0/0 = SW1 1 cnfg = ./config idlepc = 0x60989090 [[ROUTER R3]] model = 3725 console = 2003 aux = 2103 wic0/0 = WIC-1T wic0/1 = WIC-1T f0/0 = SW1 2 cnfg = ./config idlepc = 0x609890c4 [[ethsw SW1]] 1 = access 12 2 = access 12 There is docs on line that explain the above.

All,
dynamics is the only alternative solution. The only draw back is that you need to get access to the iOS images that it supports. Do a s search on the net.

Hi,
Unfortunately, Packet Tracer is completely inaccessible. There web sight can be found at the following link. http://www.ciscovision.org/
Hope that helps.

Hello Sean and all. Thanks for your answer and sorry for my late reply. Just for clarification - Dynagen tool is needed too, which can be seen in your launching scripts. I installed dynagen with dynamips included, and prepared my first config based on your config files and some found in the Dynagen examples. I'm under Windows, but the tools work nice. Thanks all for pointing me in right direction. Greetings, Greg. W dniu 11.12.2015 06:23, Sean Murphy napisał/a:
You only need the dynamips program only. Below is the scripts I use:
The below script runs the simulator.
cd /tmp ; sudo /Applications/Dynagen/dynamips -H 7200
The below script launches the config:
sudo /Applications/Dynagen/Dynagen.app/Contents/Resources/dynagen $1
You have to run them in that order. The 1st script will run in its own window. the 2nd script runs in its own terminal window. Below is an example config:

There is docs on line that explain the above.

Hi Sean. Thanks for your answer, and great news. Would I need a dynamips only or a dynagen for using these configs too?
And what about Networkbench program: I heard, that it's text-mode network simulator, which could work for me... But I don't know is it worth of running Linux virtual machine and trying compilation... http://netlab.gmu.edu/networkbench/
