JFW dongle with Windows 8.1 - USB issues
Hi, Has anyone else seen USB issues with JFW (using 8.1 here with JFW 15) authorised by a dongle? I am finding that USB devices I plug into the system don't appear until I restart JFW. This means that I nearly bricked a phone today when doing an update, as the system couldn't find the phone after it rebooted. I did email FS some time ago on this and got nothing back whatsoever, so wondering if anyone else found this? If I remove the dongle, reboot the system and run JFW in demo mode, everything is fab. Thanks. Andrew.
Andrew, I have difficulties with the JFW dongle myself but I have not had that specific problem. I am running windows 8.1 but if you look at the dongle hard the system seems to think it has been disconnected but if you touch the dongle it reconnects but JAWS shifts to 40 minute mode. Freedom Scientific has been more than happy to sell me another dongle but I really don't want the one I have got. Do you think this is a dongle issue or something in software? I was considering upgrading to the dongle. On Apr 19, 2014, at 1:41 PM, Greg B. <gbobo@woh.rr.com> wrote:

Hi, I think it is a software issue or issue due to the dongle API or driver rather than anything specific to JFW. I would highly recommend not going down the dongle route as you lose your ILM activations, meaning now I have to take the dongle on a laptop if I need to use it, meaning I just use NVDA on the laptop now. It is an utter disgrace, the reason I went with the dongle in the first place was because each time I started or stopped a HyperV machine on this workstation, JFW needed reactivating. I never saw this specific issue in older JFWs running Win 8.0, can't remember when it really starting becoming a problem for me. Thanks. I have a Dell laptop that has win 7 on it I was trying to use in a work experience, and more days than not, I ended up stuck in 40-minute mode. I wonder if there's a way to keep this thing from requiring reactivation on most reboots, or if I should put the thing back up on Ebay and go with another Mac Book to do the boot camp thing with? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Andrew Hodgson" <andrew@hodgsonfamily.org> To: "Blind sysadmins list" <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Sent: Saturday, April 19, 2014 4:07 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] JFW dongle with Windows 8.1 - USB issues

Hi, Not really following you there, mine is in the back of the system and just works. I try not to move it too much as I know the USB will become flaky after a while.
