Virtualisation - will it make our lives easier/more difficult?
Hi, I am just wondering what people think about virtualisation, specifically in an IT company using products like VmWare, Virtual PC, and presumably some of the technology coming up in 2008? I have had a couple of experiences: I have been using Linux virtualisation for ages, both running kernels inside a host operating system - the machine that runs this list is running in this way, and for a small length of time, using the Zen virtualisation system in RedHat for a test project I am working on at work. The Zen I have had more problems with, both on a technical level, and also the fact that it is harder to get at what is happening in the virtual system - if I don't have SSH access to the machine, I have to resort to a virtual serial connection. However, I have had less success with Microsoft Windows - using both VmWare and Virtual PC, I have had issues installing the Jaws intercept drivers, and when I am running in a Virtual PC session, it seems to somehow disrupt the Jaws session on the host OS, so that Jaws doesn't speak correctly until I reboot. I think this may be something to do with video drivers, or the way I am using the virtual system, as I go into full screen mode on occasions. I am hoping to try out ESX server this year, which is VmWare's flagship product, to see if it has any advantages over the others. Hi Andrew, I played around with vmware workstation on my laptop. I had just one issue running the latest ubuntu for workstation in vmware. Always when I brought the vm down my soundcard muted automaticly. For me no problem because I still have braille output. I hope to try esx server out ass well. Wonder if it would be possible to access the esx server console without the use of virtual center? With microsoft virtual pc I did not even try to use it. We had virtual pc at my microsoft courses. I was making notes of things I wanted to get feedback on here last night. Is there a vmware or Virtual PC system that works OK with a screenreader in XP? I'm going to get a Mac because I know vmware fusion works great for what you're talking about here Andrew. I read in one fellas blog about him running Linux, XP, and Lepoard all in one session. I grabbed Microsoft Virtual PC 2007: May 4, 2007 from, http://www.blind-computing.com/windows/programs/setup.exe Coudl never get it to read with JAWS 8. I'm grabbing it again today to have a fiddle while off, I'm presuming this will read with ascreenreader because it's on this site? Hi, I don’t believe that the screen will read with Jaws, however, the issue I had last year was getting the Jaws intercept drivers installed on the virtual copy of Windows Server 2003 I had. Whether this was due to incompatible graphics drivers loaded, or something else, I don’t know. Vincent’s results with Hal are encouraging, and if I get some time, I will try with the latest version of VPC to see what happens. I do have a Mac, and last time I spoke to someone about this they were having the same issue with Parallels and Jaws, but things may have moved on since then. I can’t do Bootcamp on mine because it is a PPC model. Thanks. Andrew, I heard last summer that vmware worked better with Jaws than Parallels. Parallels was meant to be grand with Win Eyes and Win Eyes worked grand with vmware also. Hi, Is parallels an other virtualization tool? Anyway please keep in mind I was using hal on the virtual machine only. And not on the host operating system, which was a flat windows xp installation. Most of the time we had server 2000./2003 running as a virtual pc. But when I run vmware on my notebook with jaws and ubuntu other then the soundcard issue I described I don't have any problems so far.
