NVDA with various program categories?
Hi guys, I'm really no system-admin and appoligise for off-topicness here. I'm sure as a system administrator, you often get to sort out pc's where files that are corrupted need to be replaced, cleaning viruses, installing operating systems etc. I'd appreciate your input if you could perhaps, please tell me if you use NVDA as a screenreader? If yes, what program/s along with NVDA do you use for the following categories?: disk partitioning? file recovery? anti-virus/spyware? In a normal windows installation, I have no problem with this but, i'm thinking of trying to make a windows pre-environment and using NVDA as it doesn't rely on video-hooking as jaws and window-eyes does. Your help would be much appreciated, Regards
Let us know how nvda works in pe; I intended to do this quite a while ago but just never found the time. My understanding is that pe 2.0 which is the one you'll be wanting to use doesn't include a gui by default, but there are some projects that are 75% close to what we want; from memory all that we would need to do would be to integrate audio, eth and wlan drivers, nvda and some apps for troubleshooting as you mentioned. Hi Ben, I've already integrated NVDA in to WinPE 2.0 and 3.0 as well as audio drivers graphics, WLAN/LAN, and all works well, yes the projects you mentioned are really good, although its just about finding what really works with NVDA. I really wish that jaws wasn't so heavily dependent on video-hooking, but then again, if it wasn't I'm probably sure they wont be where they are today with access to various elements of programs etc. I could do a recording if anyone wants, and if when time permits if no-one has this going as yet, Just to hear what things sound like in there, what's present and what's not But if someone does, do let us know what programs you use for the categories mentioned as well as any other category you wish to put there if it wasn't mentioned. Would you mind posting an iso someware as a proof of concept? I'd be more than happy to host it. As far as programs go, I like malware bytes, portable avg, portable super antyspyware and cleanup. Some of those programs come as installers, but its not hard to make them portable. In the projects I've scene, a ramdisk gets created apon boot which a selection of programs gets placed in, but I'm not sure if this is the best way of doing it really. I think that there should just be a directory of portable apps on the root of the disk which people can run. If the worst comes to the worst and the user is running it from a cd where they can't add any tools, they could still access a network share and do things that way. Great work. Ben. Hi ben, I'd be more than happy to post the iso as a proof of concept, however, I felt the recording was perhaps, the best I think I could do, due to the following issues: 1. When I made the project, I had to use my own version of xp in the case of WinPe2.0, and also 7 in the case of winPE 3.0. If I post the iso, I don't think I'd be following the license issues entirely as I'd practicly be giving windows xp or 7? as one can use even the pre-environment for various things. 2. Even if I were to post the iso, I think you'd be having a problem with driver issues? It could perhaps be rare, that you I and many others who would wish to try this have the same hardware configuration thus using the same drivers? note: to work around this problem, what I've done was to buy an external sound card, so it makes it alot easier when working on different systems. 3. Where I am, I do not have unlimited access to the internet, hence I get very little bandwidth per month and have to share internet with other people. Even the projects which you mention, require that you use your own source for getting all the required files. Note: I could also write a small tutorial/guide on how I did it if its wanted, I must thank you for your input on the portable applications. And yes, you are right, or at least this is how I do it, I keep the portable applications in a folder on the root of my external hard disk. Because if I were to integrate the applications to the image file that will be loaded in to ram, the image file would have grown alot due to the amount of extra things added, and also, I wanted the image file to be as small as possible because it equates to faster booting, and will also boot on systems with less then 256mb of ram. Currently, my image is at 160mb. But if you have any questions that I might be able to answer, feel free to ask. I understand about the licencing problems. I don't advicate breaking the law, especially on a list that is indexed via google, but technically, if this was made using pe 2.0 (E.G. the pe that comes with vista and 7), if someone wanted to use it on a computer hat was running xp, they would actually be breaking the eula. I think, however annoying its going to be that your correct in the only way that this will work is if you or both of us write some sort of tutorial for everyone else about how this is done to avoid the licencing problems. As far as drivers go, I found a project that had integrated the sound driverpack from driverpacks.net which includes drivers for many different soundcards. This was what I was hoping to do when I was researching this myself. On 11/04/2011, Zameer Mahomed <core7xx@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi Ben, Yep I also used the driverpacks.net for my install of xp especially when i'm installing on to different systems which I have no knowledge of drivers. It also comes in handy with regard to the sata or the mass storage debacle since that can be a real pain as well. I have yet to integrate the drivers for windows vista and 7 from there, but have been abit lazy in integrating it in to the .wim image as one would need to integrate it in to each image. Was thinking of writing a simple batch file to do it, but laziness... I honestly don't think it would be breaking the eula for using say a vista PE created project on a windows xp system, I.e. assume the MBR of an xp partition has been corrupted somehow, and you have a program in your inventory, and because you are using WinPE 3.0 as an environment to fix the problem, it wont be as if your are copying files from the winPE 3.0 or anything to repair it. What will be happening is: you use winPE as a way of accessing the program to fix the mbr, and that will be it. I know of course, that you don't advocate braking the law, but I just put it out there just in case anyone decided to talk about the files etc. Yep a tutorial will be good indeed.
