Installing jfw9 during a windows unattended setup?
Hello, Might be slightly O.T so please respond privately if necessary. I'm doing work with a custom windows xp pro unattended setup. I'm wanting to install applications along with the setup, one of which is jfw9. I've heard it's possible to do a silent install, but not sure how to do this, nor even if it is possible to package the file so it would install. Thanks. Dave.
Dave, I copied a document I have regarding silent installs for jaws. I have done jaws installs both local and remote using the silent option. Sorry if I bother anyone but I just decided to copy the document and paste it into this email. What are the various command line switches I can use when installing JAWS? Answer: There are a number of special installation commands that may be helpful to network administrators. To install JAWS using these options, do the following: 1. Press WINDOWS Key+R. 2. Choose the Browse button. 3. Navigate to the folder where the JAWS setup package is located. 4. Select the setup package file and press ENTER. 5. Press END and then press the SPACEBAR. 6. Type one of the following: * /help - provides an explanation on how to extract the installation settings ini file. This can be useful with custom install settings needed when installing Network JAWS Client silently. * /morehelp - lists the the pre-defined installation switches such as /type serverwithspeech, and /type silentremote, etc. * /ExtractSettings - Outputs the contents of Settings.ini to the output file specified. The installation process is not performed. If the output file already exists, it is overwritten. If there are spaces in the path to the file, the path must be enclosed in quotes (for example: C:\Package.exe /ExtractSettings "C:\FS setup\OldSettings.ini" ). * /ReplaceSettings - Specifies an initialization file for the setup package engine to use instead of the Settings.ini file stored in the resources. This flag can be used if any of the contents in Settings.ini must be overridden. If there are spaces in the path to the file, the path must be enclosed in quotes (for example: C:\Package.exe /ReplaceSettings "C:\FS setup\NewSettings.ini" ). * /Log - Outputs the setup package process to the log file FS_Setup_Package.txt. The log file is created in the same folder as the setup executable file. * /Type Silent - Silently installs a typical installation of JAWS without displaying any installation dialog boxes or prompts. * /Type Repair - Repairs a typical installation of JAWS. Once the repair begins, you will not be able to cancel the operation. During the repair, progress dialogs are displayed and a clicking tone is played. At the end, you will be prompted to restart your computer * /Type Safe - JAWS is installed without making system changes. System changes include installing video hooks in Windows NT, 2000, and XP, and installing Microsoft Active Accessibility (MSAA). * /Type SilentSafe - JAWS is installed silently and without making system changes. * /Type Client - Installs only those components necessary to run JAWS from a local area network server. This setup type will not create a JAWS folder, but will install video hooks and MSAA as needed. * /Type SilentClient - JAWS is silently installed as a Client setup. * /Type Server - Server setup includes the same restrictions as Safe setup. In addition, it creates only selected icons in the Start menu and makes limited changes to the registry. Its intended use is for those who want to install JAWS on a server, but do not intend to actually run JAWS on the server. * /Type SilentServer - Performs a silent Server installation. * /Type ServerWithSpeech - ServerWithSpeech setup installs JAWS on a server. Speech and braille access is provided for local users on the server. * /Type SilentServerWithSpeech - Performs a silent ServerWithSpeech installation. * /Type Remote - Use this setup type when installing JAWS on a computer that will be accessed through a terminal session by JAWS users. Special video hooks for terminal services are installed and the virtual speech and braille drivers are set up. If you are running the installation from a remote location during a terminal session, this setup type is automatically detected. * /Type SilentRemote - JAWS is silently installed as a Remote setup. * /Type Roam - Allows you to use JAWS on a network with roaming profiles. No separate folders are created for user and shared settings. All settings are stored in the folder where you installed JAWS. * /Type SilentRoam - Performs a silent Roam installation. 7. Press ENTER. I haven't tried it since jfw 7.1 but the silent install was broken as of version 6.4. Maybe they fixed it for 8 and/or 9. Here is a link to a Freedom Scientific knowledgebase article about doing a silent install for jfw 5: http://www.freedomscientific.com/fs_support/BulletinView.asp?QC=856 I can verify that it used to work. I think it worked for jaws 6.1 but don't quote me on that. For a long time, I had my unattended install install an old version of jaws just so I could have it. But I eventually switched to installing nvda. It's way, way easier to install during an unattended install and it's free. Hi, Ok, thanks. Where do you get NVDA, what speech does it use commandset, etc. And how do you do the unattended install? I like free, and i like ease and i like speech better than narrator on startup so this would be great. For my unattended installs i'm either doing things manually or using nlite. Thus far it's working, i'd definitely like to get other apps installed automatically is there a list of apps i can install unattended? Thanks. Dave. -----Original Message----- From: blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of John Heim Sent: Tuesday, August 12, 2008 11:13 AM To: Blind sysadmins list Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] Installing jfw9 during a windows unattendedsetup? Nvda is at http://www.nvda-project.org/ Nvda is really sweet. Well, considering it's free it's fantastic. Not as good as jaws but pretty darn good. I used to use a really slick unattended installation system from http://unattended.sourceforge.net/ But my department hired a Windows guy and I let my setup breakdown. You have to know quite a bit about linux and networking to set it up in the first place. You boot from a linux CD and it sets up a Windows network installation on the target machine. It reboots the target machine and the Windows network install begins automatically. Very slick. The main problem (besides taking quite a bit of setup) is that you have to keep building a new linux kernel for the boot CD to support your hardware. Eventually, that got to be too much to maintain. Also, I don't think it works for Vista. There is still quite an active support community. At one point I did dozens of installs a day using this system. I could get an install started in about 2 minutes and I'd have a fresh Windows install complete with dozens of packages in about 30 minutes. It didn't matter what the hardware profile was as long as it could boot from a linux CD. So that was really sweet but when my department hired a Windows guy, I stopped maintaining it. He uses ghost. But from what I understand, you have to have a different image for every different hardware profile. That seems even harder than what I was doing. But it's his baby now. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dave" <dave.mehler@gmail.com> To: "'Blind sysadmins list'" <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Sent: Tuesday, August 12, 2008 11:17 AM Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] Installing jfw9 during a windowsunattendedsetup?

Hi, Thanks for the link. I'll check it out. I have used unattended, but just in the evaluation stage, i might get more in to it, as i do have linux experience. Thanks. Hi, In regards doing this with Vista - Vista seems to have got a lot of the unattended installs broken because of the way it uses the image based setup program rather than the copy routine of everything up to Server 2003. This is also the case with Windows Server 2008, where our server deployment kits are now just doing the initial driver installs, then making you boot from the Windows 2008 CD and continue on from there. Andrew. -----Original Message----- From: blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of John Heim Sent: 12 August 2008 17:41 To: Blind sysadmins list Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] Installing jfw9 during awindowsunattendedsetup?
