Hello, If anyone is using bitvise ssh client with a screen reader please let me know. I'd like to know which one and what you had to do to make it work? Thanks. Dave.
I've used it in the past, though not recently. What are you trying to get working? -----Original Message----- From: Blind-sysadmins [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of David Mehler Sent: Tuesday, February 28, 2017 12:44 PM To: blind-sysadmins <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Subject: [Blind-sysadmins] Bitvise ssh client Hello, If anyone is using bitvise ssh client with a screen reader please let me know. Definitely version 2. Something it's been ages since I've touched it .. like years. And I think that talking to the developers about it would be a much better method than using a lower, and possibly less secure, version. -----Original Message----- From: Blind-sysadmins [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of David Mehler Sent: Tuesday, February 28, 2017 18:49 To: Blind sysadmins list <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] Bitvise ssh client Hi, Do you have a version that worked? I'm particularly interested in this question. Jaws has now become so bad for SSH access in Putty, the Git bash client and the SSH natively in Bash for Windows that I have had to resorted to having a Linux box in run level 3 beside me in work at all times. This has become particularly bad in Jaws 18. Noone else seems to have the same kind of trouble but this problem is equally bad on several machines from a dell ultra portable, a custom built desktop to the Microsoft Surface book. All running Windows 10. Several problems I am encountering are: 1. route Jaws to PC sends the mouse to the bottom of the window instead of to the location of the PC cursor. Navigation by character in Nano / vi / the command line results in Jaws double echoing characters and losing track entirely. Echoing of new text to the screen works about once every ten times I use any of the various SSH clients available to me. The Jaws cursor frequently doesn't read anything in the window. I'm kind of tairing my hair out about SSH access at the moment. It's become so bad that I have to avoid Jaws for this part of my work day. -----Original Message----- From: Blind-sysadmins [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of Bell, Lance (HSAL) Sent: Wednesday 1 March 2017 14:28 To: Blind sysadmins list <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] Suggestions for other SSH Clients Hi all and thanks for the thought Dave. I use 2 machines all the time. I keep a old laptop or netbook with Linux on it for ssh, command-line access etc. It is a pain, but I never have trouble with Windows Jaws and speech. If you use a kvm switch, you can use one keyboard. kp On Wed, 1 Mar 2017, Darragh Ó Héiligh wrote:

You might be able to fix the jaws script for putty though. I haven't been a Windows user for many years now but the jaws scripting list used to be very active and very helpful. If someone wants to perform a valuable service for the blind community, you could write a jaws script for putty. Don't look at me, I am a linux user. On 03/01/2017 08:51 AM, Darragh Ó Héiligh wrote:

There is no script for PuTTY. It was previously necessary to modify the say nonhighlighted text function or add this to the PuTTY script but since Jaws 18 that's no longer necessary. However, this never helped cursor tracking and often resulted in too much text being spoken. It was workable though. Hi all and thanks for the thought Dave. Does anyone have any suggestions as to their most favourite SSH Client and how effective screen readers work with that software.
Best regards, Lance

Hello,
If anyone is using bitvise ssh client with a screen reader please let me know. I'd like to know which one and what you had to do to make it work?
Thanks. Dave.

I'm using Secure CRT 8.0.2 and JAWS 18. I made a very simple script that speaks text written to the terminal window. Cursor tracking works well enough for me to edit in vim and work at the commandline efficiently. I have noticed one issue in recent Secure CRT versions, which is that when the JAWS cursor moves across the menu bar, the menu sometimes activates. This makes reviewing near the top of the window somewhat problematic. I used the Secure CRT keymap to create a key for toggling the menu bar. This does not happen when using NVDA. The script is here: http://chrisnestrud.com/projects/jfw/scrt Chris On Wed, Mar 01, 2017 at 02:51:36PM +0000, Darragh ? H?iligh wrote:

Noone else seems to have the same kind of trouble but this problem is equally bad on several machines from a dell ultra portable, a custom built desktop to the Microsoft Surface book. All running Windows 10.
Several problems I am encountering are: 1. route Jaws to PC sends the mouse to the bottom of the window instead of to the location of the PC cursor. You mean for Windows, right? Linux does ssh really well in a lot of different ways. Seriously, if your job requires you to spend most of your time using ssh, you might be better off switching to linux. That's what I did. Hello, I'm also curious as to this question. In order to get Windows ssh access going I'm using an old version of Securecrt version 6.2, the newer versions do not speak text echoed through the screen. I'm in need to replace my existing Securecrt solution as that version does not support modern protocols, ciphers, and hashes. Thanks. Dave. On 3/1/17, Katherine M. Just as an aside, the Windows version (the one officially being supported by Microsoft) works on the regular command line. I tried it on my router last night; couldn't get in, but that has more to do with SSH being disabled by default than the accessibility of the client. There is also PoshSSH if you like using the PowerShell syntax as oppose to the normal SSH syntax. -----Original Message----- From: Blind-sysadmins [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of Bell, Lance (HSAL) Sent: Monday, March 06, 2017 12:01 AM To: jheim@math.wisc.edu; Blind sysadmins list <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] Suggestions for other SSH Clients John, Yes for Windows 7. Hi Lance, Let me know if you have any issues with Reflections. From memory, I think I set the cursor to block rather than blinking which is the default. I also took all the scroll bars off. Once you have one session how you like it and saved in a .r2w session file, you never have to worry about it again because you can just take that .r2w file, amend the host you are connecting to and save that as a new .r2w file. All your settings are maintained but you then have a session connecting you to a different host server. It really is the best for ssh access. If you want sftp, use win-sftp which works fine with JAWS too. Cheers, Phil. -----Original Message----- From: Blind-sysadmins [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of Bell, Lance (HSAL) Sent: 06 March 2017 05:01 To: jheim@math.wisc.edu; Blind sysadmins list Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] Suggestions for other SSH Clients John, Yes for Windows 7. Hi, For years I have only ever used Reflections. It is a brilliant product and works fantastically well with JAWS which is what I use as my screen reader. I think it is sold by Attachmate these days. I use it all day every day at work for access to all the Linux servers I need to work on. OK you need to use the JAWS cursor to review output from commands you enter but that's no issue. it is really faithful showing the correct cursor position which of course is vital. Editing commands from your command history is just a doddle. I have never found the need to look any further than Reflections in the last 15 years or more. I have to admit though I haven't tried it on a Windows 10 machine yet since we're still all on windows 7 at work. Bet you could edit the jaws scripts to cause command prompt to read automatically. The last thing I would want. Who wants to hear eclclaprp1007:/dev/mapper/]# or equivalent every time you do anything. It would drive me mad. I suppose it is all personal taste though. I ensure that the JAWS echo setting is set to none for Reflections rather than the default of highlighted. Anyone else using Teraterm Pro on Windows? It might not have as many features as some of the other clients but I find it works pretty well with JAWS. Using JFW 16 here on Win 7. Also occasionally use Plink. Which gives you ssh from a command prompt. I find it easier to set up tunnels using Plink as the syntax is more or less the same as on Openssh on linux. But I prefer Teraterm for interactively typing commands as with Plink, JAWS reads a lot of extraneous symbols. Oh and Prompt on the Iphone.
