Hi, Anyone else had issues getting activation resets from Freedom Scientific? I normally request a reset around twice per year, but this time I had an issue where I upgraded the RAM in my laptop, causing me to have to activate again, then this weekend I tried to install Vista, activated, and had a driver crash which meant reinstalling. I did get the activation count reset, but I got a message stating that they have noticed that I had to have the account reset a few times, and to contact support if this continued happening. I am frankly unhappy with the current activation process, and wonder if anyone has got FS to work round it in their situation? At work its even worse since due to the license type I was given I only have one activation, which means that if I need to reinstall I am going to have to reset it afterwards. Thanks. Andrew.
Andrew, Wso far I haven't had any problems with activations, at home or at work. I am currently rebuilding two computers at home and we will see how FS acts. Greg B. Greg L. Hi, I have never had an issue up until now. To be honest there was no problem in getting reactivated, it was just the tone of the email suggested there may be an issue if I continued doing resets. This is the third time I have reset this year, mainly due to the laptop upgrade and the driver issue I had with Vista on Sunday. Yeah, I haven't had any problems either. This had better not be a trend
though. If FS starts giving me trouble when requesting a new activation,
that would be the last straw.
Unhappy with the JFW activation policy? Unhappy is a vast understatement.
I'm sure a lot of people on this list are constantly replacing parts on
their computers. That's what we do for a living. Or maybe you want to try
making your PC dual boot and have to reinstall Windows. Maybe after that,
you decide to try vmware. And that's on top of all the times you might
re-install for the same reasons anyone would like if you got a hard disk
failure, etc. Swapping out parts, re-installing Windows for whatever reason,
these things all require you to re-activate jaws.
Freedom Scientific is going to drive customers away. I am trying to go
jaws-free as soon as possible. I even went out and bought a Mac with my own
money hoping to dump jaws. If I get good enough at using Voiceover, I'm
dumping jaws. It's not because of the cost. It's because of that activation
policy.

Yeah, they should allow for deactivating so if you know you're doing
something major, you could deactivate it, sort of like how Mobile Speak is
doing now on the Windows Mobile side of things.

Just this morning I had to increase the memory allocated to one of my
virtual machines and guess what? Of course I needed a reactivation of
JFW. If Windows can live with the change without causing me to
reactivate with Microsoft why can't FS play by the same rules?

About a year ago, I sent FS tech support a message saying they're driving me
away as a customer. They actually replied which I didn't expect. FS tech
support is really good at returning emails. You have to give them that. But
I didn't expect a reply to this particular email.
Anyway, the reply was kind of a vague justification for their policy. I
guess that's reasonable too. But I said that I can understand that they are
worried about piracy but I'm a paying customer. You're punishing paying
customers for other people's piracy. I just think it's really bad
marketting.
But maybe FS doesn't think jaws will be around long anyway.

Interesting... I had to get my activation reset yesterday as well. The Microsoft classes I am taking use VirtualPC and each time I get a new virtual machine to study on I need another authorization. I want to do the right thing so I own 4 JFW licenses. However yesterday I got an email reply from Beth Soreanno (sp?) in somewhat of an accusatory tone telling me that I have requested too many authorization resets. After explaining to her the situation about me going to school (New Horizons Computer learning centers) and the need for many authorizations she took my information and passed it along the way. This afternoon I got a call from Eric Damerery (sp?) himself and he said the solution to my problem was to have me set up a network JAWS license server which will administer the licenses that I have instead of installing the authorizations on each local machine. I am not sure how much this will cost me or how well it will work (if at all) but I will get it set up and report back to this list. I have never had a problem getting my authorizations reset and I suspect that FS is either seriously fearing piracy or is being overtaxed by the whole ILM scenario. This unfortunately is why I have window eyes. Now I use jaws as my preferred screen reader, but when I need to work on any system that I think might be temporary, I use window eyes. I am also using window eyes on some of the servers I manage. I do prefer window eyes, however I knew that when this ILM came to be, it was only time until this would happen. If there was a screen reader as good enough for me as jaws is, I would switch right away. I like zoomtext's authorization because you can return the activation to move it to another computer. frustrated with activation, /David -----Original Message----- From: blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of Frank Ventura Sent: Tuesday, November 18, 2008 6:09 PM To: Blind sysadmins list Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] JFW activation Interesting... Hi, It was the same person who spoke to me on this issue. I did write back, so hopefully my comments would be passed on. In my case, a network server doing the auths may be a bit overkill for my needs, I am only a single user of JFW, and don't really want to install a network auth server. Also, at work, this may be a security issue, as all the services have to be signed off by various people. Thanks. At work, we have a network jaws with a 10 user license. It works quite well
for the most part, except if the network connection drops to the server.
What I use for my own part, is I purchased a dongle. I don't use their
idiotic ilm scheme, i just keep my dongle plugged into the machine. no
activation problems. I have several dongles as a matter of fact, one i keep
in my own machine, and one I can take around to other machines along with a
thumb drive version of jaws if I need to do maintenance on them.

yes, apparently jaws constantly queries the server. if the network
connection drops, jaws gets upset and you get an error message saying it
can't contact the server. even if you don't have this particular problem,
unless you add a system environment variable forcing jaws to look for the
server at a specific address, jaws will occasionally lose the connection.
you have to add the environment variable
LSFORCEHOST
with the ip address of the server on each client to force jaws to look for
the license server.
very annoying.
by the way, the license management software that runs on the server isn't
jaws accessible, never could understand why freedumb wrote it that way.

Hi,
Thanks for the environment variable trick, I looked at the license
server bit a few years ago and it was talking about having the license
server on the same subnet as the clients, which at work wouldn't work as
we have a highly segmented network using several departmental VLANs.
It may be ok for my home use, though the only server I now have that
runs Windows is X86_64 at home.
Thanks.

Frank

Hi,
Anyone else had issues getting activation resets from Freedom Scientific?
Thanks. Andrew.

even on the same subnet, you must use the environment variable trick. jaws
seems to get its little pointed head screwed up for no reason and can't find
the server unless you use the variable thing, even if the network connection
doesn't drop.
Now, what I have done, is connected my home machine which is only authorized
for jaws 8, and using vpn, got jaws 9 and 10 to run on my home machine using
the work server. I suppose it is technically illegal, but I rationalize it
as conducting work related network research.
and besides, since I am the only network admin, they have no idea how or
what I am doing.

Hi,
Thanks for the environment variable trick, I looked at the license server bit a few years ago and it was talking about having the license server on the same subnet as the clients, which at work wouldn't work as we have a highly segmented network using several departmental VLANs.
It may be ok for my home use, though the only server I now have that runs Windows is X86_64 at home.
Thanks. Andrew.

Hi,

so hopefully my comments would be passed on.
In my case, a network server doing the auths may be a bit overkill for my needs, I am only a single user of JFW, and don't really want to install a network auth server. Also, at work, this may be a security issue, as all the services have to be signed off by various people.
Thanks. Andrew.

Hmmmm, after reading this thread, I just made up my mind that I'm sticking with Window-Eyes for now, GW-Micro makes this stuff so much easier. And while Window-Eyes has its issues (kough kough where's Java support? Kough kough) the things described here sound silly. I guess if you're a home user no big deal, or if you're in a job where you stay at the same machine again no big deal, but for people who tinker or use lots of machines, wow. And the whole situation with Terminal Services is just silly. I have a machine running Windows Home Server, key word is home, but if I were a JAWS user, to gain access to it I'd need the professional version of JAWS and a remote access license. Never understood why they don't make one version of JAWS that works on all OS's, and if they want to make remote access an option fine, but include one free license. Even MS does that (grin.) So yeah, FS isn't gaining a customer of me any time soon.

Hi,
It was the same person who spoke to me on this issue. I did write back,
so hopefully my comments would be passed on.
In my case, a network server doing the auths may be a bit overkill for my needs, I am only a single user of JFW, and don't really want to install a network auth server. Also, at work, this may be a security issue, as all the services have to be signed off by various people.
Thanks. Andrew.

Frank

Hi,
Anyone else had issues getting activation resets from Freedom Scientific?
Thanks.

Even MS does that (grin.) So yeah, FS isn't gaining a customer of me any time soon.

yes, apparently jaws constantly queries the server. if the network
connection drops, jaws gets upset and you get an error message saying it
can't contact the server. even if you don't have this particular problem,
unless you add a system environment variable forcing jaws to look for the
server at a specific address, jaws will occasionally lose the connection.
you have to add the environment variable
LSFORCEHOST
with the ip address of the server on each client to force jaws to look for
the license server.
very annoying.
by the way, the license management software that runs on the server isn't
jaws accessible, never could understand why freedumb wrote it that way.

Hi,
Are you saying that if the network connection to the server drops, then the auth will fail and JFW will stop working?
That would possibly cause me issues at work, as I hop onto different network connections by the use of a smart switch on the desktop.
USB connections are blocked at work by default, though it would be trivial to allow the JFW dongle (I have had to allow some Aladdin keys in the past, which I believe is a similar issue).
Andrew.

At work, we have a network jaws with a 10 user license. It works quite well for the most part, except if the network connection drops to the server.
What I use for my own part, is I purchased a dongle. I don't use their idiotic ilm scheme, i just keep my dongle plugged into the machine. no activation problems. I have several dongles as a matter of fact, one i keep in my own machine, and one I can take around to other machines along with a thumb drive version of jaws if I need to do maintenance on them. phil

How much extra does it cost to buy the dongles, and how do they get upgraded
when you add an SMA, say after 11 is out and it's time to renew again? If
you get one, is it in addition to the ILM or would I have had to buy it when
I got my original Jaws license?

the dongles cost $45 u.s. when you get an sma, freedumb sends you an update
file that you install using the dongle viewer program.
you have to request the file from tech support, they don't seem to send it
out automatically.

Frank

Hi,
Anyone else had issues getting activation resets from Freedom Scientific?
Thanks. Andrew.

the dongles cost $45 u.s. when you get an sma, freedumb sends you an update file that you install using the dongle viewer program. you have to request the file from tech support, they don't seem to send it out automatically.

Yes, but freedom doesn't like to work with one using ILM as much if they
have a dongle. They have told me at times that I shouldn't be using both. In
addition, if you loose your dongle, they have told me that it could
jeopardize my whole license. Thankfully I haven't lost one, they are just
fragile.

Hi,
It was the same person who spoke to me on this issue. I did write back,
so hopefully my comments would be passed on.
In my case, a network server doing the auths may be a bit overkill for my needs, I am only a single user of JFW, and don't really want to install a network auth server. Also, at work, this may be a security issue, as all the services have to be signed off by various people.
Thanks. Andrew.

Frank

Hi,
Anyone else had issues getting activation resets from Freedom Scientific?
Thanks. Andrew.

i think it depends on who you talk to at freedumb. They told me the
opposite. I needed to activate more than 3 computers, (not at the same
time), so they advised that i use a dongle.

Yes, but freedom doesn't like to work with one using ILM as much if they have a dongle. They have told me at times that I shouldn't be using both. In addition, if you loose your dongle, they have told me that it could jeopardize my whole license. Thankfully I haven't lost one, they are just fragile.

Yes, but do you then have to buy network licenses to replace the standard
ones? I'm sure they wouldn't buy the others back, so now you'd be stuck with
4 licenses you have little use for.

Hi,
It was the same person who spoke to me on this issue. I did write back,
so hopefully my comments would be passed on.
In my case, a network server doing the auths may be a bit overkill for my needs, I am only a single user of JFW, and don't really want to install a network auth server. Also, at work, this may be a security issue, as all the services have to be signed off by various people.
Thanks. Andrew.

This afternoon I got a call from Eric Damerery (sp?) himself and he said the solution to my
No, according to Eric they can convert the standard licenses to network
licenses.

Yes, but do you then have to buy network licenses to replace the
standard
ones? I'm sure they wouldn't buy the others back, so now you'd be stuck
with
4 licenses you have little use for.

was to have me set up a network JAWS license server which will administer the licenses that I have instead of installing the authorizations on each local machine. I am not sure how much this will cost me or how well it will work (if at all) but I will get it set up and report back to this list. I have never had a problem getting my authorizations reset and I suspect that FS is either seriously fearing piracy or is being overtaxed by the whole ILM scenario. Frank

Hi,
Anyone else had issues getting activation resets from Freedom Scientific?
Thanks. Andrew.

All they need to do is add a way for you to back out your authorization. If
you could ship the authorization back to the FS server, do your re-install,
and then re-authorize, all would be well.

Ironically this is something which the Duxbury Braille Translation
authorisation allows. A single user license can be installed on up to
three systems, and both activated and de-activated over the internet.
If either process fails because you do not have in internet
