Hi all, I have an interesting problem that I have not run across before. I am trying to get audio (sound) output from our Dell PE 840 running Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise. I have tried a myriad of USB sound cards all with the same result. If I plug in a sound card that I have never used before into the Dell it will start working and I can get Narrator to work fine. Now if I reboot the computer and try that same USB sound card it won't work again and never will. This is the same results as with all sound cards I have tried. I have heard something about Win 2k8 not allow the loading of non signed drivers at boot up. Is this true and how can it be fixed? If not does anyone have any suggestions as to what to do to make this work? I am really pulling my hair out on this one. Tia Frank
Frank, 2K8 is 64Bit isnt' it? If so then AFAIK there's no way of by-passing the driver signatures. That's part of 64Bit Windows platforms. It just wont' load the drivers if they aren't Digitally Signed. How about shouting MS themselves? Have you tryed removing the card from Device Manager, rebooting? Does it come up again then? A different USB port? I've seen on 32Bit Windows 7 bad drivers behave this way. I'd a NAS who when connected via USB would do this. I actually ran it through all 12 USB Ports on a tower as it died on each port after a reboot. Eventually I ended up just having to trash the NAS and take the drive out and use it as a stand-alone USB drive. Terrible waste. Barry

Barry, yes it is a 64 bit system. Actually, I think Win 2k8 R2 only comes in 64 bit. I have already gone through all the USB ports. Is there a PCI or USB sound card that will have signed drivers for 64 bit Win 2k8? Kind of stumped on this one. Thanks for the help. Hi Frank, Creative Sound Blaster # SB1040 And the X-Fi Xtreme - PCIe Card These are both PCI Express cards. Both will work well with native drivers on Windows Server 2008. Cheers, Barry.

Hi all, I am in the market for an ultra portable laptop (3 lbs or less). My primary concern is the fastest performance. I have an Lenovo x200 which is on its last legs and need to replace it ASAP. Cost is really not a factor. Can anyone recommend a very high performance ultra portable? Should I get the x201 which is the replacement for what I have or is there something better out there. I looked at the specs for the x201 online and was dismayed to find only the garden variety of I5 processors available. Thanks Frank
I just bought a portege r700 which I'm pretty impressed with. It can take an i7 if you have the money, upto 8GB of ram and it comes with a 7200RPM drive by default. BAttery life is listed as around 8.5 hours; in practice it only really manages 6, but thats still not bad for the spec imo. Do you really need an i7? Even some of the i3's rub sholders with high end c2d's, although obviously with an i3 you don't get turbo boost which does make a noticeable difference. I haven't tried running any virtualization stuff on it yet. However, my uncle just setup a 2008 r2 test domain under vmware on an ultra low voltage core 2 duo which runs noticeably slower than the i3 350m which I have in the r700, so you should be fine really. I have an atom based netbook running the aging n270 which actually performs pretty well, but obviously any of the i processors are going to blow it out of the water, so it really depends on what your wanting it to do. I was just about able to run vinux under virtual box and it was able to handle things like wamp and java compiles very well; I've turned it into a pvr now. OK thanks, good info there. Now shifting gears a little. What are you thoughts about the performance differences between the SSD options and the 7.2k conventional disk options? I can see some performance gains with reads on the SSDs but write performance concerns me. Also shifting gears a little more which OS should I use as a host operating system, the included Win 7 Pro or Win 2k8 R2? Can the new version of VPC that comes witht the Win 7 Pro's XP mode be installed in Win 2k8? Also does Hyper-V now support sound in the VMs or will I still have to RDP into them to get the screen reader to work? Frank, for super portability it's all about the Atom processor. Check out the Asus E series especially the 1200PN. I have an E1008 which is a single core device and runs very very well, definitely good enough for admin work on the go. In my mind Asus is the only way to go in this space. Hope that helps Scott On Oct 9, 2010, at 6:20 AM, Frank Ventura wrote:

Hi, Is the Start menu in 2K8 R2 Vista/7 style? I've loaded up a few ISO's in VM, but I can't get audio out of the box of any of them. I want to test in VM first before writing an unattend and deploying it to a workstation as a server. Is the Audio Service disabled by default as it's a Server? Cheers, Barry.

Tia Frank

Hi all, I am setting up a Win 7 Pro machine for testing purposes with XP Mode installed. I have two JFW licenses one with remote access enabled and one without. Should the JFW in the XP virtual machine be authorized with the license with the remote access enabled or should the remote access license be activated on the Win 7 Pro host? I always get this confused. Thanks Frank
Hi, I believe the activation should go on the host machine (running Win7 pro). The XP machine doesn't need activation. Hi, Yes the start menu is the same as in Win7. The way I do this is as follows: 1. Press start menu. 2. type in cmd and press shift+apps. 3. Press down arrow twice to run as administrator. 4. Press alt+Y to accept UAC. 5. Type in net start audiosrv. Hope this helps. Andrew. -----Original Message----- From: blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of Barry Toner Sent: 11 October 2010 22:50 To: 'Blind sysadmins list' Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] Sound card drivers not reloading Hi, Is the Start menu in 2K8 R2 Vista/7 style? I've loaded up a few ISO's in VM, but I can't get audio out of the box of any of them. I want to test in VM first before writing an unattend and deploying it to a workstation as a server. Is the Audio Service disabled by default as it's a Server? Cheers, Barry.

Hi,
Net start audiosrv. You need to do this in an elevated command prompt under Windows Server 2008 R2.
Andrew.

Could it be as simple as: Net start "windows audio" Or would I have to do something else after that? Thanks Frank

Hi,
I think the issue here is that Windows sets the audio service to disabled, and when the drivers are getting installed it is starting the service. Try enabling the Windows Audio service if it isn't already.
Thanks. Andrew.

Hi all, canyone recommend a anti-spam device that can be put in front of our SBS/Exchange network that does not require a subscription and can be set up/maintained by a blind person (web interface?). Thanks Frank
Yes, Sendmail.:) Wrap in your own antispam rules, use something like spamhaus and bam you're done. If that's not an option go with something like the Sonic Wall or Baracuda. They all use subscription services though. Doesn't exchange have antispam filtering built in? On Oct 18, 2010, at 3:35 PM, Frank Ventura wrote:

Frank: I imagine all of the comertial antispam appliances need a subscription of one kind or another, just like all comertial antivirus packages. You can build your own as suggested, but if you are still interested in looking at the comertial route, I've had good luck accessibilitywise with Sonicwall's E-mail security appliances. I can't vouch for how good the antispam is compared to others, but the UI is simple HTML pages. I'd also played with the Secure Computing, now McAfee, Ironmail and that worked relatively well but needed to be fussed with a little more to get the web pages to load properly. Finally, I'd look at outsourced solutions, such as Spamsoap and Microsoft's Exchange Hosted Services (different from their BPOS hosted Exchange.) Much less maintenance work, and most of them also archive and hold mail in case your Exchange server goes down. I've used Spamsoap.com, which is using the MXLogic engine, and the amount of spam blocked was excellent. It was pretty cheap too, I think the basic service was something like $2 per user a month. Hi, Any commercial antispam solution will be a subscription based service. The one I currently use is Alt-N's Protection Plus for Exchange, which is paid for on a software upgrade basis either for 1 or 2 years, however, the web interface is a bit difficult to use. The most accessible system I used (and probably the cheapest) is SpamTitan http://www.spamtitan.com, you install on your own hardware or a Vmware image. I used it at work for ages and it knocked spots off our previous Clearswift system. I did originally build my own system using Exim and SpamAssassin, however, this type of system is difficult for others to maintain unless they are interested in it, and also setting up a per-user quarantine is difficult. Also look at hosting services like Ryan suggested, we use Mimecast at work but the web interface is also a bit strange to use, there are plenty of others out there. If using SBS a lot of folks recommend the Calyptix UTM appliance which does email scanning, web scanning and AV scanning on other traffic. Never used personally. http://www.calyptix.com/ There are also other UTM appliances that do similar with varying price tags and functionality. Last but by no means least there is a paid-for antispam option built into Exchange 2007 SBS over and above the default antispam configuration called Forefront Security for Exchange. This is an installable option when installing SBS. If using an appliance in front of SBS, be aware that you need to disable SPF checking on the SBS server, as it can cause false positives - the SBS checker needs to be the first machine that receives the message. Thanks. Andrew. -----Original Message----- From: blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of Frank Ventura Sent: 18 October 2010 23:36 To: Blind sysadmins list Subject: [Blind-sysadmins] Blind friendly anti-spam device Hi all, canyone recommend a anti-spam device that can be put in front of our SBS/Exchange network that does not require a subscription and can be set up/maintained by a blind person (web interface?).
