Trying to read checkboxes in add roles and features
Hello, Has anyone found a nice way of reading the checkboxes in the add roles and features wizard in Windows 2012 and 2016? I'm kind of stuck at the moment. Yes, I can use powershell but it doesn't fit with what I'm trying to do at the moment. I've had the same thing. I find JAWS better at server tools so far than
NVDA.

Not trying to be bad here. But I don't need me too responses. I think we all know that NVDA isn't as good as Jaws with server applications. What I really need is a way of reading these checkboxes.
Again, I'm not trying to come across as harsh. Your input is always welcome. But today, I need a solution as I'm trying to get some work done and this server role and features wizard, the most simple bit of UI possible isn't reading and therefore I'm unable to get this job done.

I've forwarded this onto the EDAD, perhaps someone there will have a better way to help than I do. The one thing I can suggest is to try with Narrator. I seem to remember that Narrator read the checkboxes, but I don't have a 2016 machine handy at the moment so I can't confirm that.
I've been dealing with this issue myself for years. Unfortunately the solution I've always turned to is Powershell. May I ask what about your situation won't fit into Powershell and just what you're wanting to do?

Hi,
One issue I have found with Powershell when doing this is it doesn't bring up the initial configuration wizards. The ADFS roles were a prime example here where I wanted to use the wizards to configure a role but they didn't come up when adding it via Powershell.
Andrew.

So once you installed the ADFS role using Powershell, if you went back into Server Manager there wasn't a notification under the role that more steps were needed? That's been my experience. Also, I am seeing references to an ADFS Powershell module, I don't know if there would be commands in there to complete initial setup, but that would be similar to what I've found with other roles. With ADDS, for example, once you install the ADDS role through Powershell you then import the ADDS module and can finish the configuration using its CMDlets.

Hi,
This was a couple of years ago and I didn't actually go back into Server Manager to check. I could have configured this with Powershell but I didn't know much about ADFS at the time so needed a helping hand with this.
I just tried this on a 2016 VM I have here and it does work in the way you suggest, you have to go into Server Manager and find the wizard to run in there.
The other thing I find with installing features via Powershell is sometimes you need to fiddle around to find the right combination of features to install. IIS is a prime example of this, where you want the minimum feature set to be able to let the server work but not install extra features. I used to find that if I went into Server Manager and enable the IIS feature by just checking the box for .Net 4.5 in IIS, you could get different less features enabled than by installing IIS in PowerShell then enabling that feature. I think that issue is now sorted, but it is just an example of where I use the features dialogs.
Andrew.

In Windows2016, these wizards don't come up by default when you're installing the rolls. It can take some messing around in the server manager event / messages views to find the action column. That really threw me the first time I set something up in Windows 2016.

Works on my server, 2012 r2 and NVDA. I do use though sound blaster sound card in the server, maybe that makes a difference.
I go line by line and it tells me what service/feature installed and what is not installed.
If it's an option, maybe to try external USB sound card and NVDA can do the trick?
