I know some of you are involved with company laptops, so you may wish to read on. Having installed Windows 7 (RTM) on a couple of systems and been extremely pleased with the vast improvement in performance, I decided to install it on a Compaq 6910p laptop. It had been running Vista Business, so on the face of it, SHOULD have been O.K. for W7. Naturally I ran the Windows 7 Compatibility checker (Albeit still in Beta) and was delighted that it came up with a clean bill of health. Since I was performing a clean install, I fully expected to have to update a zillion drivers, and indeed spent quite a few hours doing just that. But one has defied all attempts. It's the "PCI Simple Communications Controller". This is vital for the Wireless modem, if nothing else, and I really do want wireless working. Call Compaq, whose initial attitude was, "We don't support Windows 7", but when pushed and reminded that Microsoft say Vista's drivers work with W7, they pointed me to a download. However, seems the Intel drivers see W7, and tell you words to the effect of "This operating system is not supported". And for goodness knows what reason, Compatibility Mode is not available. Needless to say I've spent quite few hours now researching this on the Internet and have drawn a blank - even on Intel's own user lists. So be warned. George.
I had a similar problem wit a Dell 5530 HSPA wireless modem on windows 7 x64. I was lucky in that it is made by Samson so with a lot of looking around I found a driver for it. Hi Darragh, If you encounter similar with Compaq Notebooks, do please pass on. It's driving me scatty. It's the word "simple" which especially hacks me off. It clearly is NOT. BTW, strictly off topic, but I have to ask, what's the "Oireachtas", and how is it correctly pronounced. My best mate's from Balbriggan, an ex AIB bank manager. I'd hate to show my ignorance by asking him, especially me being a Scot! The Houses of the offices of the Oireachtas is like the main government offices in Ireland. I'm employed by a company who are contracted by this department to manage their IT. We've a huge infrastructure here from around 10 server rooms and more coms rooms that I have been able to keep track of. It's a fantastic place to work as the environment is very large but very flexable. We've around 94 physical servers with a good chunk of other virtual servers on top of that and around 2100 workstations. Every machine on the network has Jaws installed so when I remember to bring my dongle with me there's never a PC or server I cant access. Oroktass is loosely how you would pronounce it.
By heck! I can think of a few guys here who will be absolutely green with envy just at having JAWS everywhere and accessible with a dongle. -----Original Message----- From: blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of Darragh.OHeiligh@Oireachtas.ie Sent: 02 October 2009 11:51 To: Blind sysadmins list Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] Windows 7 warning The Houses of the offices of the Oireachtas is like the main government offices in Ireland. You betcha, When I was working as a sys eng in www.liberty-it.co.uk It was a bloody nightmare doing any sortive of on-site work for clients because of access issues. Either the machines where flaky as where dev machines, or some bs group policys, (that my dept implamented and enforced), would prevent me from reaching full potential at times. Hi, I still would be a bit apprehensive about working for a Linux only shop atm. I still don't think the access to the GUI is quite there yet, especially on some of the more Enterprise distros like RedHat. Luckily in my job I don't need to access other people's workstations, however when I did I used Narrator or System Access. I can use live servers with just the Windows magnifier, and install WindowEyes on some of the test boxes to verify what I'm doing, so it isn't that bad. Thanks. Andrew. It depends on what you mean by "linux only". I use a linux/Windows dual-boot machine for my workstation but everybody else uses linux. All of our servers are linux. I do occasionally do have problems supporting the linux GUI. For instance, a professor asked me to install skype on his machine. I got it installed but his microphone didn't work. He could hear his callers but they couldn't hear him. And I have no idea how to configure a microphone in gnome. I usually use Windows for most of my mail. But I do all kinds of other things in gnome. Answer the occasional email, edit code, etc. Problems are pretty rare and as far as I know, everything is working except for that professor's microphone. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Andrew Hodgson" <Andrew.Hodgson@allpay.net> To: "Blind sysadmins list" <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Sent: Friday, October 02, 2009 11:04 AM Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] Windows 7 warning

I'd agree. I'd much rather ssh in to someone's box and take care of an issue than try some sort of remote desktop kind of thing. Thankfully, I haven't had to do end user support since the 1990S so that's a good thing. I remember having to do end user support, I had about 100,000 dial in customers all using windows 3.1 and 95. It really hurt, still gives me bad flashbacks.;) ----- Original Message ----- From: "John G.
Hi,
I still would be a bit apprehensive about working for a Linux only shop atm.
Thanks. Andrew.

Or, you could run an operating system like a Unix flavor that allows you to remotely administer everything.;)
I had interviewed with Dream Works Interactive and every desktop there used Linux, they run an entirely Microsoft free environment. Well Linux or Macs in the artistic areas.

By heck! I can think of a few guys here who will be absolutely green with envy just at having JAWS everywhere and accessible with a dongle.
