keeping the official free PBX distro up to date
Hi Everyone. I'm about to perform a fresh install of the official free PBX distro from freepbx.org. I was wondering if anyone has any tips on how I can keep the system up to date? I have never used cent OS before, i've used either debian or arch in the past. The online documentation seems to indicate that you can run scripts, but says they must be run in order. I'm assuming the first time I install all the updates will be pulled in automatically, but how can I maintain the system after that? Or shall I just keep free PBX up to date and leave the base install as is? Any help greatly appreciated. Cheers, Mo.

You'll have to keep the base install up to date for security reasons, at least. The usual update tool for Fedora/RedHat-based distributions is dnf, as in sudo dnf update. I don't know what changes this custom distribution makes, though, or what the implications are for updating it.
Hi, You don't need to know anything about the system to upgrade it, you download the upgrade scripts and run them they are not cumulative. It will upgrade everything on the system including the OS. Hi Andrew and Jason. Many thanks for your comments. Am I right in thinking that the distro is Cent OS 7? If so, then could I also install other packages to increase functionality of the server and leave freePBX running at the same time? Or is the distro customised by the freePBX crew to the point that you can't install anything else? Also, I was wondering about sound support. What I wanted to do was have a religious stream playing via my sound card for broadcast round my house as the system has an inbuilt sound card using MPlayer or similar. Have they stripped sound support? I understand that these questions are not easy to answer as they're quite specific, but any light people can shed would be excellent. As for the scripts, there's a list on the scripts page for the upgrade path that you should take from version 10 upwards. I assume that I don't need to run every single script on that page? What script do I need to run assuming that I download the latest release tomorrow, and how often? Ordinarily, I would've just used yum to update the system. Could I not just do that? Cheers, Mo. Hi, The system is supposed to be treated as an appliance, so whilst you may be able to put your own stuff on the server, it isn't recommended and could break either the software you install or the PBX software. Downloading the ISO image will give you the relevant version, you can then upgrade using the scripts. The scripts install RPM packages which have been upgraded, but I wouldn't do a Yum upgrade on the system in case it causes other issues. I haven't played about with FreePBX for a while but believe it is based on CentOS 6. If you want to install your own software, I would suggest starting with a generic Linux distribution of your choice, and then installing the packages that you want - including Asterisk, FreeSWITCH or whatever telephony solution you prefer. I don't bother with these appliance-like distributions. I would prefer to have greater control over the installed packages. If it were running in a virtual machine and did exactly what I wanted, I might consider it.
