All of our computers are on a Windows 2012 domain. Most of the laptops reportedly work well out in the field. But a handful of them are reported to have very slow bootup and login processes when not able to find the domain controler. The boot up and login take more than 5 minutes on some ocasions. These are all windows seven professional machines set up on a 2012 domain. Have any of you encountered this issue, and do you have any tips or tricks that helped laptops boot up faster when they can't find the domain controller? My minimum specs are I5 with a minimum of 4 gigs ram.Thanks.
Hi Troy, what are the common factors for the laptops that work well or if it’s simpler that don’t work well. Is there a command brand or windows version / service pack or set of installed packages that consistently works well? Is this the sort of thing you can track. I’d probably start there but remember I’m a network engineer not a windows specialist so take what I suggest with several grains of salt. I’m good through layer 3 and anything above that is voodoo.:)

Way too many variables. Do you have roaming profiles on for laptops? How is connectivity speed? How is group policy configured, are profiles cashed etc... I think I have had that issue. I turned off roaming profiles for laptops, use only folder redirection, and keep on improving Wi-Fi connection. Significantly improved startup/boot up. P.S. I am on a small domain, maybe only 15-20 clients. Thank you. This is what I needed to start thinking about. You're right about too many variables. Some are connecting to home WiFi, some to iPhone hotspots. There are a whole slew of GPOs. I need to check the casching. -----Original Message----- From: Blind-sysadmins [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of Anatoliy Shudrya Sent: Tuesday, January 26, 2016 1:00 PM To: 'Blind sysadmins list' Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] Domain laptop boot issue Way too many variables. As already stated lots of variables. The last time we had a boot issue it ended up being traced back to routers that were having problems submitting requests to the DHCP server from the workstations trying to log in. By the time the request was received and sent back several minutes, more than five, went by. I guess the main issue is what the computers revert to when the domain controller can't be contacted. In house the computers boot just fine. I'm now thinking it's my GPO situation. -----Original Message----- From: Blind-sysadmins [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of vic.pereira@ssc-spc.gc.ca Sent: Tuesday, January 26, 2016 1:07 PM To: blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] Domain laptop boot issue As already stated lots of variables. Yes, this is a good point. Helper addresses. Troy, one thing you can make sure is are the users with the boot problems in house or external or both. Also if in house are they all on the same VLAN having problems or different VLANs. It’s likely that the helper addresses aren’t configured in this case. Lots to look at here though.

Hi, What polocies are in place on the domain? Mapped drives or redirected folders? Thanks. There are GPOs for drive mappings, about 6 printer deploys, power management, pc firewall and a bunch of Internet Explorer settings. So the laptops off site could be trying to connect to printers that are unavailibil and drives that can't be found. I'm not sure how to force the laptop to move on when these resources aren't available. -----Original Message----- From: Blind-sysadmins [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of Andrew Hodgson Sent: Tuesday, January 26, 2016 1:27 PM To: Blind sysadmins list Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] Domain laptop boot issue Hi, What polocies are in place on the domain? I wanted to give a little update on this issue. I found that there is a group policy setting called wait for network. I located in Computer configuration, admin templates, system, login. I disabled this. applied this to all computers in my laptop OU. After testing one computer, it seems to be making a difference for the login time. -----Original Message----- From: Blind-sysadmins [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of Andrew Hodgson Sent: Tuesday, January 26, 2016 1:27 PM To: Blind sysadmins list Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] Domain laptop boot issue Hi, What polocies are in place on the domain?
