Hi. Seriously looking at replacing my scripts to use Winget now instead of Chocolatey. I notice there is even a package for JFW 2023 as well as NVDA in Winget. Has anyone actually had experience with using these packages? May play over the weekend. Thanks. Andrew.
I noticed that winget update --all updated NVDA when I ran it, even though I had not used Winget to install NVDA originally. This is encouraging. I've been using Winget for a while now to install and to update software on my Windows system. It's especially good for finding and upgrading out of date packages that I've overlooked. While Linux package managers have more features and cover the entire operating system, this is clearly a move of the right kind for Microsoft to be making. -----Original Message----- From: Andrew Hodgson <andrew@hodgson.io> Sent: Friday, March 3, 2023 6:08 AM To: Blind sysadmins list <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Subject: [Blind-sysadmins] Replacing Chocolatey with Winget Hi. Hi. I tried to run my Chocolatey scripts on a fresh install of Win11 on a laptop today and ran into a few issues. Mainly that Win11 install is giving us an outdated version of Winget and you have to go to the store to download the new version and its not called Winget but something like App Installer or similar. It seems to detect installed software that you install from the store or by yourself and lists it as a package. I did get all my software installed in the end so will see how usage of it goes during the next weeks. I did run into an issue installing an older version of Terraform which I am using for a project it only wanted to use 1.3.9 so I suspect older versions don't exist as manifests. Its sad to see Chocolatey being replaced but it always seemed to be a bit of an add-on to me. Andrew. -----Original Message----- From: Jason White via Blind-sysadmins <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Sent: 03 March 2023 16:15 To: 'Mailing list for blind system administrators' <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Cc: Jason White <jason@jasonjgw.net> Subject: [Blind-sysadmins] Re: Replacing Chocolatey with Winget I noticed that winget update --all updated NVDA when I ran it, even though I had not used Winget to install NVDA originally. Hi, Recently played with it a little bit. Seems to work fine. I updated WinSCP and KeePass. Both where installed manually before.
