Cisco NetAcad Labs - Packet Tracer accessibility
Hello All
Hope you’re well.
I’m half way through a degree with the Open University and as part of that I am completing the CCNA course from Cisco.
This course includes using labs in the network simulator software Packet Tracer. sadly, as far as I can tell, this is a drag-and-drop interface and isn’t usable enough with a screen reader for me to complete the labs independently.
Does anyone know of a solution or work around to this? Has anyone ever done the CCNA before that can give me any advice? The NetAcad content itself is mostly fine, and in my opinion, works best with NVDA, it’s just the labs that are causing me problems. And of course, what with everything still be in virtual, I don’t think there is a possibility of me being able to physically complete the labs with Cisco equipment and instructors.
Thanks for any help you can give. Kind regards Luke
Hi Luke, If I remember correctly, Packet Tracer use to have a check box to enable screen reading mode, but I never messed with it back then as I was a high partial and had access to my own lab. If you are really wanting to get good at it, I recommend the hands on approach vs. virtual as you will learn where the physical cables attach and get a better grip on what it is you are doing. You can find these labs on Ebay completely assembled with all cables and everything you need for CCNA, CCNP, and CCIE. I am now primarily a JAWS/NVDA user. I will share that you wont have any trouble doing the work as I do it in a really large environment. I also do consulting gigs for government agencies such as a recent long distance microwave network. If I can be of any further assistance, please feel free to let me know. Best, Billy L. Hi Billy Thanks for that info. I agree, the best way is to have the physical equipment in front of me, as in the real world. If no other solutions are found that might be the option I go with. I’m glad you don’t think I’ll have any problems in the industry, that’s one of the reasons it is attractive to me, because especially with the Cisco stuff it’s all CLI based. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to find the screen reader mode switch, we’re on Packet Tracer V8 now. I’m hoping they haven’t removed it. All the best Luke

Luke, packet tracer has never been accessible. Try Wireshark (TShark, I believe, is the cli equivalent). TCPDump can also be used. On 9/29/21, Luke Scholey via Blind-sysadmins <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> wrote:

Let me amend my statement re: Packet Tracer. When I taught at CAVI--which has been a very long time ago now--it was not accessible. If they ever implemented changes since then to make it so, I am unaware, which says absolutely nothing. The tools I mentioned should help. Wireshark is pretty dicey accessibility wise, but its cli counterpart, TShark, should work well for you, & they have improved Wireshark's accessibility somewhat. Hi Jackie That’s really helpful info, thanks. Do you think I’d be able to use Wireshark in the context of the CCNA course though? The labs from Cisco are specifically designed for packet Tracer and I’m not sure whether I’d be allowed, even if it were possible, to convert the lab activities into alternative form that would make use of wireshark. I’ll enquire about that, and see what happens. All the best Luke

Hi Luke, Thanks for previous email. Adding to the discussion... Tshark will work if you get the physical lab. I even tried GNS3 which is a similar environment to Packet tracer. It too isn't accessible accept for it allows you to load up router images as virtual OS. You would still have issues getting the interfaces to talk I think. The biggest barriers I've faced is the idiots who think Blind/visually impaired person's aren't capable of much. Hi Billy Thats interesting, how does GNS3 present the virtual image of a router OS? Is it contained within the program, so you have to use the GNS3 interface to interact with it, or does it create something similar to a VM, so some type of guest running on top of the host? If it was the latter, I imagine it wouldn’t be so simple as to just SSH into the guest? Thanks for all the advice. All the best Luke

Hi Luke, It is connected to VirtualBox as the hypervisor. If I am not mistaken it creates a fully functional VM minus the interfaces being totally functional. I couldn't ever get it to do what I wanted a few years ago.

Hi Luke,
Thanks for previous email.

Hi Jackie
That’s really helpful info, thanks.

Hi. Yeah that is sound advice if using real Cisco equipment. However with the lab software this is all virtual so traditional network tools can't be used in conjunction with the labs. I went the physical equipment route for me, worked best in the long run. Never got the hang of the lab software. Luke, what is the OU course offering you in terms of exam, is it the real CCNA or are you doing the exams from the OU as part of the module? Hi Andrew It’s the real CCNA. What I’d give to be able to go the physical route! Unless I by a kit off ebay like Billy said, I can’t see another way of getting out of using virtual labs. The day school at a local Cisco partner centre has even been cancelled, understandably, and replaced with an online alternative.
