Well nobody answered the question of how to record skype so here's how and here's why not. Virtual audio cable costs $35 and is about the same price as mx skype recorder which really does work and can encode to mp3 and timestamps calls etc. It even puts caller name in the wav file names. Virtual audio cable basically behaves like a patch cable however you can mix multiple streams into one cable and you can tap a cable by multiple applications so heres how we record skype: You'll need 2 cables. One for your input signal usually from the microphone and one for the output of skype so you can catch it. Honestly you'd be better off with something like MX skype recorder which will do all this for you automatically. Go into your VAC control pannel and make sure you have 2 cables. Windows XP doesn't have listen to this device so you'll have to use audio repeaters with all their strangeness and instability. Still intending to do this? Oh well here we go. Use audio repeater (MME) not kernel streaming or you'll have exclusivity problems with the audio device. You can reduce latency by setting buffers to 64 and have 32 of them, or have buffers of 128 and have 16 of them. Now set them up like this: repeat your microphone into cable 1. Launch the audio repeater select your microphone as the input, and cable 1 as the output. Tell skype to use Mic1 as it's input as skype needs to see a mono record device. Cable 2: tell skype to use cable 2 as output. Also use audio repeater to repeat cable 2 to your speakers so you can hear skype's audio. Now set up a linking repeater to link cable 2 to cable 1 so cable 1 now holds a mix of microphone and skype's output. Now record cable 1 with an audio editor. Jitter shouldn't be too bad although sometimes the audio repeaters will scramble, crash and do other strange things and you'll have to relaunch the whole shebang. Don't link cable 1 to 2 or you'll hear your microphone in your speakers. Now you have a handy dandy mixing setup. You send stuff you want to hear such as skype, possibly your speech or winamp to cable 2 (If you want your caller to have music) and you inject stuff you don't want to hear into cable 1. I have an autoit script that will launch all of this for you if correctly configured and it uses nutils to put the audio repeater windows out of the way, thanks tyler. Alternatively crack the help file to VAC and using the command-line parameters to the audio repeater write a batch file. That skype recording software never looked so good! For my next trick? Now set up a linking repeater to link cable 2 to cable 1 so cable 1 now holds a mix of microphone and skype's output.

Now record cable 1 with an audio editor. Jitter shouldn't be too bad although sometimes the audio repeaters will scramble, crash and do other strange things and you'll have to relaunch the whole shebang.

Don't link cable 1 to 2 or you'll hear your microphone in your speakers.

Now you have a handy dandy mixing setup. You send stuff you want to hear such as skype, possibly your speech or winamp to cable 2 (If you want your caller to have music) and you inject stuff you don't want to hear into cable 1.

I have an autoit script that will launch all of this for you if correctly configured and it uses nutils to put the audio repeater windows out of the way, thanks tyler.

Alternatively crack the help file to VAC and using the command-line parameters to the audio repeater write a batch file.

That skype recording software never looked so good! For my next trick? Teamtalk to skype relays or skype to ventrillo etc, all credit for the idea to @simon818.

Um, u might do better using stereo mix, if your card supports it. VC is ok, but if u have to run more than 1, they tend to get out of sync w/1 another. I just bought a roland ua-33 tricapture, which has a loopback recording feature for just this reason. I hope it works. music123.com has 'em for 129.00, but today, call 'em& they'll give 15% off.

This is not really an admin question, but it does deal with audio devices on a system so I thought someone on the list might have some suggestions.

My goal is to record a skype conversation. My current setup is a laptop with either an earbud in the earphone jack and an external microphone in the mic jack or a headset with both earphone and mic. This machine is running XP and I'm wondering if I can set up the GW Micro GW Connect 2.1 skype client with virtual audio cable to pull this off? If this won't work I'd appreciate any other suggestions.

Virtual audio cable basically behaves like a patch cable however you can mix multiple streams into one cable and you can tap a cable by multiple applications so heres how we record skype:

You'll need 2 cables. One for your input signal usually from the microphone and one for the output of skype so you can catch it. Honestly you'd be better off with something like MX skype recorder which will do all this for you automatically.

Use audio repeater (MME) not kernel streaming or you'll have exclusivity problems with the audio device.

You can reduce latency by setting buffers to 64 and have 32 of them, or have buffers of 128 and have 16 of them.

Now set them up like this: repeat your microphone into cable 1. Launch the audio repeater select your microphone as the input, and cable 1 as the output. Tell skype to use Mic1 as it's input as skype needs to see a mono record device.

Cable 2: tell skype to use cable 2 as output. Also use audio repeater to repeat cable 2 to your speakers so you can hear skype's audio.
