Hi Listers, Hope all are well. Firstly, I'd like to thank the people who replied to my question regarding accessibility of networking equipment, I've gone with a mix of Ubiquiti and mikrotik. As I continue with my lab, I have come to the point of where I have setup a few virtual machines and would like to back them up. Ideally, I'd like to manage the backups from one location and remotely if possible. I've heard of software like Veeam, Acronis, Backup Exec, DLO etc, but would like to know which backup software do you use with regard to accessibility? I've tried veeam, but it doesn't seem like the most pleasant interface to use. The agent on windows doesn't seem to bad though. I don't have any complicated setups, all these backups will be stored on a NAS. Your help would be much appreciated. Kind Regards
Hi there, Most of the places I've worked, we stored the VM's on a NAS directly and let the NAS basically backup to a second or 3rd NAS. The commercial NAS we used was by Synology. It had its own backup system and ran in RAID. Either way, if you grab the files using a script you will be likely to have much success. At least with Citrix this was the case. Just my thoughts. Here's an approach that might work. 1. Use your VM software to write a snapshot of each VM to a file. It's important to ensure that the file system of the virtual machine is in a consistent state in the file used for the backup. 2. Use software such as rsync (UNIX/Linux), or Robocopy (Windows) to copy the file system images. 3. Write a script to do the above. This step requires your VM solution to support a command that can create the snapshots. -----Original Message----- From: Billy Irwin <billy.irwin@outlook.com> Sent: Saturday, December 29, 2018 5:37 AM To: Blind sysadmins list <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Subject: [Blind-sysadmins] Re: Accessible backup solution?
