Hello Everyone. Please forgive the cross posting. I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts on the following. I'm thinking of purchasing a nas solution for my home so users files are backed up in real time. Ideally, I'd like a solution where all files are stored locally i.e to internal hard drives, and you can install a dropbox stile app on each computer and specify folders to automatically back up. QNAP, Synology, Netgear, DLink and Buffalo all seem to be manufacturing Nas solutions. I've tried Synology in the past and wasn't a huge fan of their web interface. You couldn't do a lot with it at all which is a real shame as the devices have a lot of functionality. My primary concern is web interface accessibility. It would be nice to have a manufacturer that provides a decent web interface and that take accessibility seriously to the point that they're not breaking things every 2 minutes. I could build my own but i've then got the concern of how reliable the real time backup apps are in a home made solution. So, in short does anyone have any thoughts on which devices you've found to be accessible/reliable? iOS and android access is not essential. What web interfaces have you been able to access with screen readers? I look forward to your thoughts. Many thanks in advance for all comments, I'll do my best to respond but may not respond to everyone individually. All the best, Mo.
Hello Mobeen, Currently I'm using EX2 Ultra series from WesternDigital. These series comes with WDRed disks that can be used 24X7 or you can buy it diskless. It has nice web interface, remote FTP support, Dropbox integration, WebDav, iOS and Android app etc. Also you can install Wordpress, Joomla or SMF board internally. You can backup your Windows pc's, iOS device photo library and Mac.. If you have aditional questions, please let me know. Regards. 2016-07-17 13:31 GMT+03:00, Mobeen Iqbal <mobeeniqbal@gmail.com>:

Greetings All, I have found the Western Digital platform fairly accessible. The MyCloud series is nice. I have one here that hold 4TB of storage. It is usable via Web, SSH, and FTP. Also uses SMB to share files. Easy to get going if you ask me. Hi. Hmm. I've just seen this unit for sale. it seems like a pretty good solution. When you say you can backup windows and macs, are files synced in real time similar to dropbox? that's the function i'm looking for. Yes I could backup at a specific time each day, but machines aren't always powered up so i'd rather have a solution that works in real time. cheers, Mo. On 17/07/2016 23:26, Can Kırca wrote:

Hello, Yes, you can do so. Aditionally, you can use SSH, APF for Mac, SMB, vertual iso drive etc with this device. You can set NAS notifications via email and install DDNS configuration for your device 2016-07-18 10:26 GMT+03:00, Mobeen Iqbal <mobeeniqbal@gmail.com>:

Yes, you can do so. Aditionally, you can use SSH, APF for Mac, SMB, vertual iso drive etc with this device. You can set NAS notifications via email and install DDNS configuration for your device

Hi.
Hmm. I've just seen this unit for sale. it seems like a pretty good solution. When you say you can backup windows and macs, are files synced in real time similar to dropbox? that's the function i'm looking for. Yes I could backup at a specific time each day, but machines aren't always powered up so i'd rather have a solution that works in real time.
cheers,

Hi,
Any view on how this device does with respect to power consumption and fan noise? Good that it has an accessible interface but I'd be interested in these other points as well.
Thanks, Phil.

Hello Mobeen,
Currently I'm using EX2 Ultra series from WesternDigital.
Regards.

All the best,
Mo.

As someone who started an ISP in his house years ago, the noise gets old quick. I used to sleep with 200 Microcomm 28.8 modems behind my head in an open rack enclosure and yeah, that negotiating sound was cool at first, meant I was making money but after a while. Between the Sun servers, air conditioning, modems and fans on the terminal servers I war ear plugs in my spare room. Once we moved to real office space and colocation space it was all good but the start up period cured me of my need for the extra machine noise. I’ll admit though, taking a full NNTP feed across several Sun boxes with big drive arrays was pretty cool. The desks and enclosures had a nice rumbling noise from all the disk access. My mother still has a single phone line delivered to her home over OC12.:) The DDM2000 fiber mux is still in her basement chugging away delivering a single phone line. The linemen’s expression when he came in to install DSL for her though was pretty priceless. Now that she’s cutting the cord I wonder if they will finally come pick up the box. You want fans try one of the old fiber boxes.

Spearking of large fans and lots of noise, In my office here I have 2 Dell R410 Rack mount server, MikroTik Router and 24 Port GB switch. Not to mention all the other 2-way radio stuff running in here. I just had to buy a portable AC to keep it cool. Sounds like I am in a full size DC. Dell gear is very loud you’re right, especially on initial power up. Speaking of noise, I’m wondering why it is you can hear read and write access on SSD disks. I have several and while they are much more quiet than their rotating ancestors you can still hear pulses when the disk is being accessed. It’s a pure SSD as well not fusion. I don’t understand how that’s possible. I thought there were no moving parts in SSD? Is this like a resonance thing or something like the old CRT tubes? I don’t understand what in an SSD could possibly make anything approaching an audible sound.

I don’t understand what in an SSD could possibly make anything approaching an audible sound.

Any view on how this device does with respect to power consumption and fan noise? Good that it has an accessible interface but I'd be interested in these other points as well.
Thanks, Phil.

Hello Mobeen,
Currently I'm using EX2 Ultra series from WesternDigital.
Regards.

All the best,
Mo.

Hi, The newer Poweredge machines (R620, probably newer models) switch the fans off so all you hear when the servers initially power up after the self test are the disks. That said I would never now go with machines at my house unless I wanted fast access to storage. For everything I have done, I have just used cloud servers to do it, and paid for the machine whilst I was using it. Ok, so if the machine is up for a while it could cost around £10-15, but it's better than buying an old server and paying money for that. Any view on how this device does with respect to power consumption and fan noise? Good that it has an accessible interface but I'd be interested in these other points as well.
Thanks, Phil.

Hello Mobeen,
Currently I'm using EX2 Ultra series from WesternDigital.
Regards.

I don’t understand how that’s possible. I thought there were no moving parts in SSD? Is this like a resonance thing or something like the old CRT tubes? I don’t understand what in an SSD could possibly make anything approaching an audible sound.

Hello Mobeen,
Currently I'm using EX2 Ultra series from WesternDigital.

All the best,
Mo.

In my case, I run 2 servers here at home to backup my customers accounts for my web/cloud hosting company I run. There servers I have at the dc are much better than what I run at home. Knowing that no one care more about your data than you yourself, I want to ensure that I have my customers stuff backed up in more than one place. It is amazing at how fast my business has grown in the last year. Meanwhile I am looking for full time work. Accessibility is the biggest barriers. I am going to make another post soon to share that side of things with all of you.

Hi,
The newer Poweredge machines (R620, probably newer models) switch the fans off so all you hear when the servers initially power up after the self test are the disks.
Andrew.

Somebody I know has two Dell PowerEdge r710's, and one of them is at his desk, I do believe. Just sort of makes a background noise in the room for him. After power up, those things are so quiet. I'm thinking of going that route for my rackmount so that I can work with servers in my house without disturbing callers.

Any view on how this device does with respect to power consumption and fan noise? Good that it has an accessible interface but I'd be interested in these other points as well.
Thanks, Phil.

Hello Mobeen,
Currently I'm using EX2 Ultra series from WesternDigital.
Regards.

All the best,
Mo.

Cost them more to get rid of that box than to just leave it. Billy L. Hmmm, I tried a demo once on a virtual private server I subscribed to for a month, and they announced going out of business before I could get into their billing area to request cancellation. That version of DSM they had, probably from some iso or something out around the net, was next to useless with JFW and probably worthy of the cancel button for me. Once Silicondust finally releases their DVR software, think it might still be in public beta for a fee, I want to get one of their networked tuners and one of the supported nas solutions their server program works on to hopefully put the how to record TV accessibly issue to bed once and for all. I think the developer of this app called Channels for the new Apple TV will be tying into it when he can, and the other platform I know to be accessible besides WD, the RaspberryPi might not be powerful, or USB not fast enough, to grab those streams from the network and get them on disk. I heard that the pi's networking actually uses USB, so I could be expecting to fit too much through a small pipe there, if streaming and storage both have to get through it. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chris Nestrud" <ccn@chrisnestrud.com> To: "Blind sysadmins list" <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Sent: Sunday, July 17, 2016 5:58 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] Accessible Nas solutions?

Hi, I also use the Synology stuff including the Dropbox style app to sync files from laptops to the NAS. That works remotely for me so I can have specific folder like music synced. The web interface is really nasty, there's no way of getting round that. However I don't believe any other unit has the same sync type app that Synology has, and that is a primary factor for me.

It would be nice to have a manufacturer that provides a decent web interface and that take accessibility seriously to the point that they're not breaking

Hi, Unfortunately I have no experience with WD NAS solutions. The Synology Sync app is pretty much like a local Dropbox, and it works remotely as well. I would check out the WD sync app before buying one if that is your primary use for the NAS. Hi, For home use I'm just using an Asus router with a USB 3.0 port. It's got an FTP server, plus media streaming. I can even play files/folders in the FTP Client Pro IOS app from it, or if I want to transfer things to Voice Dream Reader zip a folder up, then fire up FTP Client Pro, select the zip and open in then select Voice Dream Reader. Shout if you want to know the make of the Asus. +1 for Western Digital and of course Network Appliance but for your needs that’s a bit like using the Space shuttle to get from New York to Jersey.

Mo, I'd like to hear what the problems you had with the Synology interface were, or are. I've been using Synology boxes at home for probably seven years now, first on a four-bay CS407e, now on an eight-bay DS1815+. While I agree the Web interface is the absolute definition of a kluge, I haven't found anything in its function set I can't get to, although, as I said, some of it not without having to scroll through lots of screens to get to the controls I need. Thankfully, most of those are at the bottom (relatively speaking, of course, considering the way screenreaders render browser content in the linear fashion that they do). That aside, I've found Synology's organization and arrangement of functions a little odd a ttimes, but generally accessible. On Sun, 17 Jul 2016 11:31:43 +0100, you wrote:

Hi. If you try the current DSM6 online demo for synology, you'll see what I mean. None of the controls are proper links. Some buttons are labeled but don't always work when clicked on with a screen reader. Its the clunky nature of the interface coupled with the accessibility weirdness that I could really do without to be honest. I've just never got on with it on the nas boxes i've used. I wonder if there's a different in firmware used based on the specifications of the device in question and whether that influences how accessible a particular model will be? cheers, Mo.
All the best,
Mo.

What about unlabelled fields? Try adding a Synology box to active directory for example. It isn't possible to associate AD groups with local groups. Or set the IP address! Oh that was lots of fun. Then set DNS on a completely different page. These things are really not accessible. I had to get assistance in several places. The firmware had been updated about two weeks ago. These are not good boxes in my opinion. The manual said when reset it would get a static IP of 192.168.1.1 but the 4U box went straight to DHCP! I wasted an hour trying to connect to it. Over all, I'm not impressed. -----Original Message----- From: Blind-sysadmins [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of Steve Matzura Sent: Monday 18 July 2016 07:39 To: Blind sysadmins list <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] Accessible Nas solutions?
