Hi, Using a USB sound device is a grate way to ensure you have sound as early as possible in the install. It also works with many operating systems, the ones I have tended to go for are the c-media devices, because they just work out of the box, don't buy the Creative Labs ones as they try to do too much, and thus require further drivers. They usually cost around £15-20, no more. Thanks. Andrew. -- allpay.net Limited, Fortis et Fides, Whitestone Business Park, Whitestone, Hereford, HR1 3SE. Registered in England No. 02933191. Hi Andrew, Are the CMedia devices any good then? I use the Griffin Imic for this purpose. Do the Cmedias shape up as an actual sound card? Thanks. Hi, I only use it for the screen reader, and a bit of Skype/other audio, probably not a good all round sound card. I know of someone who uses this as a dictation sound card though, as she gets predictable results on several machines. Thanks. I got a Plantronics USB headset that I have set up as the default recording device but not for playback. I never needed a disk for it as it didn't have one. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Andrew Hodgson" <Andrew.Hodgson@allpay.net> To: "blind-sysadmins" <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org>; "steve" <steve@comproom.co.uk> Sent: Friday, February 29, 2008 4:09 AM Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] USB sound device Hi, I only use it for the screen reader, and a bit of Skype/other audio, probably not a good all round sound card. Hello Andrew, I've not heard of these c-media devices before. You said that you get sound earlier in the install process, how early on are you able to get speech? I've tried some USB sound devices, and like you've said, many of them require drivers and don't work too well without configuration. I tried to use a wireless usb device to work on systems that already had Windows running on them with JAWS or System access on a usb drive for sound. The wireless device would give me sound on some machines, but on others Windows wouldn't recognize the device. Thanks for your information, this is an interesting discussion. Hi, On my C-media headset I have, I can plug the headset in straight after installation of XP SP2, and get sound straight away. It did come with a CD, but the CD just had the Skype software on it - no drivers or anything, so I imagine it has been like this for a while. It has also worked on the Mac without fuss. Andrew. -----Original Message----- From: Beth Hatch [mailto:bhatch200@comcast.net] Sent: 29 February 2008 12:44 To: 'Blind sysadmins list' Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] USB sound device Hello Andrew, I've not heard of these c-media devices before.
