Before I stick my head in the lion's mouth, is it theoretically possible to set up a virtual XP on one machine and then take it to another one of different manufacture? e.g., I'll build it on an HP 8100, but I want to run it on a Dell system. The only time that virtualization struggles in my experience is when you're doing anything CPU / GPU intensive or if your program is doing anything at a very low level. I ran a XP VM under 7 for a month or so last year in an effort to cut down the amount of XP systems that were needed. Performance was next to perfect but the program I needed to run didn't play overly nicely; one of my gigs involves firmware modification on hard drives & anything newer than XP is very strict about exactly what drivers are allowed to do from what ring. Ultimately I had to preserve one physical XP machine but it's not connected to the LAN so I don't really see it as much of a problem.
