Hello listers I'm currently in the market for a NAS. Being new to these devices, my concern is accessibility, as i'd like to make full use of the device. I do understand that one may manage these devices via a web interface which sounds abit promising. I can get my hands on the following nas devices: QNAP HS-210, which is what I'd like to get. Lenovo iomega ix2 synology ds414J and also some NAS devices from Thecus. If you've used NAS devices from the above listed Manufacturers, your advice would be much appreciated. Kind regards
Hi. This probably won't be much help, but i've built my own in the past because of frustrations experienced with interface accessibility. most routers have built in USB sharing/backup across networks. I am using a netgear r7000 which isn't a bad device. I have a 3TB hard drive connected to it and just store all my media on there and backups are also taking place across my network. synology have some excellent hardware/software combinations if only they were accessible. the web interface is a nightmare with screen readers. i'm not sure about other brands, it'll be interesting to see what people come back with. nas4free is also quite useable though they have expanding menus which means you have to root the jaws curser to the main sections on the web interface and then the submenu for that link comes up and you get another drop down menu of links. you'd need a device to install on which could be left on 24/7 but there are many mini PC configurations which would do the job. even an old computer sat around could be converted. I hope this helps somewhat. ATB, Mo. On 20/12/2015 11:38, Zameer Mahomed wrote:

I have worked with a Lenovo NAS and it was an entirely unix shell type environment. Also, way up the price spectrum I have done a lot with Netapp and they have a very good CLI.

Hehehe - I don't think Netap will be in the running here. The next version of the Synology GUI is apparently going to be made accessible, I have one of their units so will see how this goes. There are some other interesting NAS projects that use your own hardware - one I was looking at was UnRaiD - heard good things about it, as it can run virtual servers as well. Haven't got enough disks to try it out yet though. One advantage with the pre-built units is their power consumption which is usually lower than general purpose kit. I used a Thekas NAS at my old job for a while and that had a usable GUI, all be it that it used an ancient version of the firmware. Hi, That would be really nice if they are. I'm using a Seagate Central here but it's really only for media consumption and Facebook backups. It's IOS app is accessible but it won't play ogg vorbis files natively. It doesn't have an FTP but does support remote sharing in a clunky web UI type way. Hi there. Thanks for all the replies so far. I've read up on building of Nas devices and I must say it looks interesting, I've never given it much thought initially. However, I'm not sure on how I would go about installing NAS4free as I've not used anything to do with Linux before. My reason for considering the hs-210 storage server, as it is fanless and has a compact design. If I could somehow build a fanless system which I'm not sure is possible, perhaps I might really consider a self-build. @Andrew, do you perhaps know if they might upgrade all their NAS devices at the same time to the new version? Or are newer software versions ment for specific NAS devices only? Hi. to install nas4free, you can either install it directly to your hard drive, or you can use what's known as an embedded image. this is an image you would write to a USB or SD card device and boot the server from that device. I used a pen drive in my case that plugged directly in to the motherboard of my server via the internal USB port. all the best, Mo. On 21/12/2015 11:12, Zameer Mahomed wrote:

@Andrew, do you perhaps know if they might upgrade all their NAS devices at the same time to the new version? Or are newer software versions ment for specific NAS devices only?

Hehehe - I don't think Netap will be in the running here.
The next version of the Synology GUI is apparently going to be made
accessible, I have one of their units so will see how this goes.
There are some other interesting NAS projects that use your own hardware - one I was looking at was UnRaiD - heard good things about it, as it can run virtual servers as well. Haven't got enough disks to try it out yet though. One advantage with the pre-built units is their
power consumption which is usually lower than general purpose kit.
I used a Thekas NAS at my old job for a while and that had a usable GUI, all be it that it used an ancient version of the firmware.

I have worked with a Lenovo NAS and it was an entirely unix shell type environment.
Also, way up the price spectrum I have done a lot with Netapp and they have a very good CLI.

Hello listers
I'm currently in the market for a NAS.

Hi, I have a Lenovo (called Iomega back then) IX series NAS. It is an IX4 from the top of my head. Unfortunately, it sems the network interface of this device died, so it is useless now. I was glad to discover the NAS used standard Linux RAID, so I could at least read the disks on another Linux machine. So, I'm now looking for a new NAS to house the 4 disks that came from the Lenovo unit. I'm also thinking to build my own machine, because after this experience I really want to be able to read the NAS disks when the unit dies for whatever reason using other hardware. Anyone here have recommendations for low power hardware to house 4 disks and be able to get goot read and write speeds for a RAID set. I'm considering FreeNAS or another ZFS based system. I've worked with ZFS on servers and really like it. Bram On 22-12-2015 11:24, Zameer Mahomed wrote:

Hi.
No you would be controling the machine either via the web or via SSH. You don't have speech on the server at all I don't think sound's enabled either.
All the best,
Mo.

Hi,
Thanks for letting me know the procedure for installing.
Just curious, does one have speech after installing or writing the image? or does it have to be installed manually?

Hi.
to install nas4free, you can either install it directly to your hard drive, or you can use what's known as an embedded image. this is an image you would write to a USB or SD card device and boot the server from that device. I used a pen drive in my case that plugged directly in to the
motherboard of my server via the internal USB port.
all the best,
Mo.
