Hi, all. I am currently a student studying at Northumbria University in the UK. My degree is Ethical Hacking for computer Security and as part of the degree it heavily relies on security and pennitration testing using Linux and windows. I am hoping to use this degree as a way to gain employment within the Sys Admin field. Can anyone advise of the accessibility of Kali Linux or provide me with some idea of the accessibility of the applications used for network tasks? thanks Lexi
Hi, This comes up from time to time. The last time I looked at this the applications worked fine if using them via SSH and on the command line, I never got speech working in Orca with Kali linux however. Not saying it can't be done, but I got in a mess with Speech Dispatcher myself. Hi Andrew. Thanks for that. I did read something earlier about the new build of Kali having accessibility features built in and was also wondering how usable they were. I believe the version is Kali Linux 103? hanks --- On Thu, 6/6/13, Andrew Hodgson <andrew@hodgsonfamily.org> wrote: From: Andrew Hodgson <andrew@hodgsonfamily.org> Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] Just an Intro and a question about computer security. Darragh, I've never done it, but I have a friend who has. I'm not sure exactly how he does it, except that he is evidently able to hear the other computer's audio. I rather suspect this has to be done using stereo mix or similar, but, again, not having done it, I don't know. It is something I'm going to be experimenting with, because I find System Access's RIM connectivity flakey & that for a pretty expensive price tag. Not Only is Rim extremely expensive but the tech support is a lot to be desired. I got a 60-day trial and tech support took so long to get back to me that they gave me an extra 60-days. By that time I had already soured on the experience, I just moved on. To give you an example on how much they cared about a perspective customer, I was blown off one afternoon because the tech support person had to finish a podcast that she had to finish. I would normally not care about that except that I was promised to get back to and wasn't at all. I had to constatntly email/call/leave messages to get things answered. I am only relaying my own experience with the product. Once I got the person on the phone, she was extremely nice and definitely gave me great support. But getting to that point was a nightmare. Are we trying to use TeamViewer for Remote Desktop (RDP?) or are you looking into going from PC to Mac? To my knowledge and I hope this changes, Mac's do not carry sound through any sort of VPN/RDP
From PC to PC I have successfully used the combination of Jaws on my workstation and loading a portable version of NVDA. You don't have to load a display mirror driver like JFW on the other computer so this works right out of the box.
You can use the remote option of JFW as well but this requires a 200 dollar fee for Freedom to press a few buttons and 45 dollars for a dongle that you will need on your end bringing the total of $245 plus shipping and handling. The caveat to this is that you will have to install a full version of JFW on the computer you are remoting into. Hi, Can you give us an overview and steps that you follow to use remote desktop from pc to pc with NVDA? In other words, I may need to connect to a colleagues computer to perform some task. Or I may need to connect say to a computer in a training room, all from my desk. We also have DameWare but I'm not sure that the remote control mechanism is accessible. I have used TeamViewer before, but only where someone else was accessing my pc. I am only relaying my own experience with the product. Once I got the person on the phone, she was extremely nice and definitely gave me great support. But getting to that point was a nightmare. Are we trying to use TeamViewer for Remote Desktop (RDP?) or are you looking into going from PC to Mac? To my knowledge and I hope this changes, Mac's do not carry sound through any sort of VPN/RDP From PC to PC I have successfully used the combination of Jaws on my workstation and loading a portable version of NVDA. Jackie, Darragh, et al.: Funny I should stumble upon this thread at this very moment. A friend of mine and I cooked up a hairbrain scheme using UltraVNC to do precisely this thing in precisely this way, and it actually works! The idea is to use Fideliphone installed on both your system and that of the system being controlled, set it to auto-answer for unattended mode, then keep UVnC server running on the remote system. The sound card running anybody's speechware you like (JAWS, W.E., NVDA, even Narrator) is physically looped back into the line-in of the sound card on the remote system, and Fideliphone picks that up on the transmit side. Of course, there's latency involved, so the controlling operator has to be mindful of this, but it's quite doable. Haven't tested it with TV yet, but UVnC is OK with it. You could do this without the audio cables using Virtual audio cable and listen to this device functionality. This would also work if the gear you were using didn't have a line-in, all to common with laptops these days. Regards, Kerry. On 10/07/2013 5:09 PM, Steve Matzura wrote:

Hi, Thanks - will have to check that out as it was one of the first versions I used when they moved over from Backtrack or whatever it was called. Hi Andrew. Thanks for that. I did read something earlier about the new build of Kali having accessibility features built in and was also wondering how usable they were. Lwexi, I am working on the same type of degree at Wright State University in the USA. I am working on the same problem as you. I am trying to get information on Speakup which is used with Kali Linux. If I find any information I will share it.
