Hello, If there are any Mac users on this list can you please write me offlist? I'd like to know your level of Mac experience. I've got the opportunity to get a used Mac and am wondering if it's a good deal or not, wanting to expand my knowledge in to Macs. Thanks. Dave.
Run and don't walk and get the Mac. What kind is it and what OS is installed? Macs are great, I've been using one for a while now and love it. Voice over is very functional, you can install your own OS, applications are accessible, and ITunes on the Mac is so much better than the PC. On Mar 5, 2011, at 9:10 AM, David Mehler wrote:

Hello, Thank you. It's a learning curve, but i'm up for the chalenge. The Mac is an iMac G4 Desktop machine, I think it's a 1.5 ghz box. It is running OS 10.x 10.5.1 Leopard I believe. Thanks. Dave. On 3/5/11, Scott Granados <scott@granados-llc.net> wrote:

OK:) So I'm running a bit more of a machine but you should still get some milage. Mine is an I7 Macbook Pro 17 inch with 8gb of memory and a 500 MB SD drive. I'm running OS 10.6 Snow Leopard which I know has had some voice over fixes applied. I'm not sure if you can run that on a G4. The G4 is a pretty old processor. Hi, I wouldn't pay much at all. A new Mini could be had for 5 - 600 new and that has a much faster processor. The G4 I think was measured in MHZ something like 4 - 600. It's basically an old RISC processor. On Mar 5, 2011, at 4:43 PM, David Mehler wrote:

I thought the g4's only went upto 1.4 and anything after that would be a g5, but I could be wrong. The powermacs always seemed a little bit expencive in my eyes, but we are deeling with apple after all. As far as pricing goes, just do a completed items search on ebay and see what sort of prices you get. I just looked and the average powermac at 1.6GHZ w 1GB of ram is going for around £150. I wouldn't really pay that much myself, but that seems to be the going price. Anything below a intel cpu won't be able to take snow leopard or the new lion thats coming out soon, but you should be able to get a good grasp of the concepts using leopard to diside if you want a new one or not. Have you considered slapping a hackintosh together instead? You could probably use some components that you already have and then if you don't like osx, you won't have wasted any money. It's a bit of a grey area, but it's possible. So long as you buy the os theres really nothing wrong with it imo considering that if you like the os you might end up buying a iMac or other apple device. On 06/03/2011, David Mehler <dave.mehler@gmail.com> wrote:

A hackintosh is when you take a standard Intel based machine and install OSX.

Hi,
I wouldn't pay much at all. A new Mini could be had for 5 - 600 new and that has a much faster processor.
The G4 I think was measured in MHZ something like 4 - 600. It's basically an old RISC processor.

Well, expanding your knowledge into Apple products is probably a good thing for any professional systems administrator. It can't hurt to have that on your resume. I bought a Mac Mini 2 or 3 years ago for just that reason. And I like it but I wouldn't say I love it. I ddon't want to sound like I'm damning it with faint praise either but like any operating system MacOS has its problems. Don't get me wrong, I like my Mac but its not God's gift to blind computer users. If you go into it thinking its going to make a Windows machine with jaws look backward you're going to be disappointed. I think that before I bought my Mac,Mmy expectations had probably been built up too high. My opinion is that there is no clear winner for screen reader bang for the buck. Jaws all by itself is more expensive than a Mac Mini. So if you get a Mac Mini, you get a computer, an operating system, and a screen reader for less than the cost of jaws itself. Is jaws that much better than voiceover? I don't know. Besides, if you really want to get off cheap, you can go with linux and orca and pay absolutely nothing for your operating system and screen reader. You can probably easily find a used computer that will run linux and orca for $100. In fact, around here, people are giving away computers that will run linux and orca just to avoid the disposal fee. So for at most a hundred bucks you can have a computer, operating system and screen reader. Is voiceover that much better than orca? I don't know that either. In my opinion, the most compelling reason to get a Mac is because Mac products have gotten so popular lately. If you're job is dealing with technology, you don't want to be left out of the next big thing. PS: As a price point, I went to the web site of the used computer store here at the University of Wisconsin. They have a G5 with 512 Mb of RAM and an 80 Gb disk for $250. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Scott Granados" <scott@granados-llc.net> To: "Blind sysadmins list" <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Sent: Saturday, March 05, 2011 12:38 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] Mac Users?

Macs are great, I've been using one for a while now and love it. Voice over is very functional, you can install your own OS, applications are accessible, and ITunes on the Mac is so much better than the PC.

I don't know, I'd think that Voice over under OS 10.6 definitely makes JFW looks backwards. Better java access, easier interface, better voices, much better stability. There are definite downsides but I'm not sure that VO isn't the clear winner. On Mar 7, 2011, at 7:44 AM, John G. Heim wrote:

I'm looking for advice and suggestions on software tracking down malware which appears to be using a PC to perform massive downloads. To describe the issue, Virgin are claiming that a system has downloaded over 700 GIGA bytes on a 50 GB cable connection. The machine is never left on overnight or for extended periods of non-use. Sadly, Virgin a not being very helpful. Any ideas? George.
George, dc it from the network, then download hijackthis from www.trendmicro.com It's under downloads > free tools >cleanup. U can put it on a flash drive & xfer it to the infected machine. Please note that this program lists both good & bad stuff, some of which, if u delete it, will kill your machine, so having a trained person look at it is recommended. It also does not find stuff like rootkits, for which u should likely use something like process explorer. What it does do is list those parts of the registry where malware can be run from, &, as such, is an excelent starting point for ferroting out the baddies. Also netstat /B (note the uppercase b) from the command line can give u an idea of active connections. U will want to run that b4 u kill the network connection, obviously. Piping the command to a file so u can look at it later would probly b helpful. Let me know if u need more help, though, having said thus, I'll be out most of the day. I have had success with Spybot Search and Destroy. I have loaded it on a few computers causing problems. I like to use www.ninite.com for the quiet install. Once it is loaded, I run the update, then select search for problems. One it does the initial removal, there are sometimes problems it cannot remove without a reboot. Allowing Spybot to run after a restart will then get rid of the few remaining problems. It is then easy to uninstall.
