Hi, Has anyone tried a software KVM for using the same keyboard and mouse on 2 machines with the host and client machines both using JFW? My company have blocked using personal devices from connecting to some services so I need to use my laptop for all work stuff from now on. I want to use the keyboard and mouse from my desktop on the laptop so I don't have to keep switching keyboards, but worried about JFW issues using it this way. Anyone tried this? Thanks. Andrew.
Hi, Andrew, At a minimum you'll need to go into JAWS Settings Center and enable the "Allow On Screen Keyboards" option. I'm ashamed to say that I hadn't known that software KVMs are a thing. The one I find that's open source is called Barrier and I'll be investigating it for my own use during my upcoming month of hibernation. If you discover things that do or do not work with JAWS and this or another software KVM, I'd be interested in hearing. --Glen -----Original Message----- From: Andrew Hodgson <andrew@hodgson.io> Sent: Saturday, December 5, 2020 6:18 AM To: members@groups.tavip.org.uk; Mailing list for blind system administrators <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Subject: [Blind-sysadmins] Software KVM Hi, Has anyone tried a software KVM for using the same keyboard and mouse on 2 machines with the host and client machines both using JFW? Yes. I have done this. I gave up quickly though. In all situations, I had trouble getting capslock and / or control to work effectively. Numlock and pause were also troublesome. Winidows just doesn't want to pass these keys through to applications without processing them first. I tried this last on the following devices that come with software KVM's in February: Startech, Dell and Acer. I'm not sure of the names of the applications. I don't have access to the devices I was testing on any more as they were in a lab at work. But they were provided by those three companies. In all situations, it was a less than optimal experience. -----Original Message----- From: Glen Gordon <GGordon@Vispero.com> Sent: Saturday 5 December 2020 13:08 To: Mailing list for blind system administrators <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org>; members@groups.tavip.org.uk Subject: [Blind-sysadmins] Re: Software KVM Hi, Andrew, At a minimum you'll need to go into JAWS Settings Center and enable the "Allow On Screen Keyboards" option. Hi, I had the same with Barrier KVM I tried over the weekend, just not reliable enough. I have now purchased a USB hub with a switch that can flick between 2 computers, I hope it will provide the necessary solution. Hi Andrew, My apologies, I'm a bit behind in reading my email so perhaps others have already responded. 😊 I have a similar setup to what you asked about using one keyboard and one mouse with multiple machines. However, it's through a hardware KVM rather than software. If you're familiar with this setup, my apologies. I'm unaware of software to do this but perhaps others can help. 😊 I labeled the switches, or buttons with Braille. I've had many of these kvm switches over the years, some have audio jacks so you can also use the same pair of headphones on multiple machines. Hi, I tried Barrier software KVM with limited success. A lot of this was the difficulty in switching machines rather than any access issues once done so. In the end I went for a cheap USB hub with option to switch inputs. It’s a bit hit and miss but have got used to it now and it does what it says on the tin.
