Gateway laptop password unlocking
Hello, I'm working on a gateway laptop it's NE56 something, it's a newer machine, it's got a 500GB hard drive, 4GB of ram, 64 bit running either windows 8 or 8.1. The original user of it has passed, and the family need in to it to see if there are any files they need/want. I've tried in both CD and USB stick bootable talking windows media nothing has worked. A friend of mine also tried NT offline recovery, that didn't work either. We are not sure why the machine is not booting from non-hard drive media. The bios is set to UEFI, if we set it to legacy then my friend's NT offline recovery disk does boot, but it can not access the partition error code 0 and says the machine is hibernating. I'm suspecting the issue is one of fast startup. Any ideeas? Thanks. Dave.
I would boot a Linux distro like TalkingArch and ntfsrepair the volume. Linux doesn't care what mode the bios is in, it can still access the disk. After the volume is repaired, you can copy off what ever you want. Alternatively, you can remove the drive, put it in a enclosure, and do essentially the same thing with another computer.
