Hello there. I need some help with solving the problem with ping on my win 7 machine at home. I just found out that by default ping doesn't work on win7 and that windows firewall has to be reconfigured by creating new rule which would accept icmp. I created new rule with the following settings: rule type, custom, allowed connection yes, access from and to any ip address yes, under protocol tipe i selected icmpv4 and under settings, i selected specific icmp tipes, where i checked the box which says, echo requests. However after applying the rule , nothing changed and ping can not be acomplished successfully. Oh btw, the machine goes out thru thompson 780 w router, with its firewall turned off. any suggestions? Hi, Ping should be allowed outbound from the box. If you want machines to be "pingable" on the LAN, you need to enable echo response in the way you describe. Can you confirm that pings going out from the box are working ok (try to ping the gateway). Thanks. Andrew. -----Original Message----- From: blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of Mario Percinic Sent: 04 June 2010 20:35 To: Blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org Subject: [Blind-sysadmins] Problems with ping on win7 Hello there. Hy. When i ping the gateway the responce i get back is fully normal, all the packets are received and nothing is lost. do you have other connectivity outside meaning does http work or other protocols? If the link is up make sure your upstream router is configured to pass ICMP. something like access-list outside permit ip any any is generally acceptable depending on the use. Unless you have some extreme security concerns I don't see anything wrong in most cases in allowing everything outbound. I would definitely check with the router. Right. That changes the issue from being on the Windows machine to upstream, very possibly the router. Yeah, it was the problem in the router which has branded firmware, so i had to find the details to log on as admin and change the configuration file. Now everything works. -------------------------------------------------- From: "Andrew Hodgson" <andrew@hodgsonfamily.org> Sent: Saturday, June 05, 2010 11:44 PM To: "Blind sysadmins list" <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] Problems with ping on win7
