security essentials installation unattended
Hello, Does anyone know if it's possible to do an unattended installation and update and configuration of security essentials? I'd like to get that working if possible. Help appreciated. Thanks. Dave.
Hey, To save you asking about every app that you want to integrate, have you considdered just making a ninite installer for all of the aps you want? I know its not propper integration as in updating txtsetup.sif to extract extra cab files in the setup, but so long as you have ethernet drivers, you could just tell the installer to run once administrator has logged on. Even if you don't have the machine connected to a network when its installing, it takes 30 seconds if that to run a single file which doesn't sound like much hardship in return for fully unattended installs which are always up to date. Hi, Just my 2cents on how I do things as well. I've found that even though I could make unattended installs, there weren't really switches to customise the install to the way I wanted i.e. for some installers I don't like it placing icons on the desktop as such. So, I've tried and I'm quite successful with another solution, where I install xp, install what ever I want, sysprep it, make an image of it using ghost, and then create an autorestore cd/dvd. Although, the disadvantage with the method I use is that, one must buy ghost. I've managed to restore my image I've created to different hardware and on different partitions as well. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ben Mustill-Rose" <bmustillrose@gmail.com> To: "Blind sysadmins list" <blind-sysadmins@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Sent: Saturday, April 09, 2011 3:49 AM Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] security essentials installation unattended

Your best bet for doing custom, unattended application installations is to use MSI packages with transforms--where supported. Check out http://www.appdeploy.com The site is geared to pushing installations but most of the information is applicable for the scenario in question.com Microsoft, for some reason, has started moving away from using MST style transforms with their own apps; Office 2007, for example, uses XML files for customizing the install process. Hi, Talking of MSI installs, I've found a great program which converts an ordinary install created by any program to an MSI install package. What's more is that you can minnipulate almost everything from files to registry entries. Basicly, it captures the install of a program and then offers to package it in to an msi package after you decide to do customisations etc. It's called Emco MSI builder and comes in a variety of versions. it can be found at: www.emco.is they also have other great applications for deploying applications remotely, Sadly its not free, but just thought of putting this out there in case whoever is willing to go to great length's to make installs unattended and using the MSI way.
